Depeche Mode's U.S. breakthrough album, 1984's SOME GREAT REWARD, expanded the U.K. synth band's American following from a small cult of Anglophiles to the same sort of teenage adulation that the Cure had started attracting around the same time. Featuring the Top 20 U.S. hit "People Are People," along with cult faves such as the intensely mopey "Blasphemous Rumours," the fashionably S&M-tinged "Master and Servant," and the disarmingly earnest love ballad "Somebody," this is the album on which Depeche Mode finally shed the stigma of founding songwriter Vince Clarke's departure.
SOME GREAT REWARD finds Martin Gore coming into his own as a songwriter, with Alan Wilder taking Gore's place in the George Harrison role, adding two fine tunes of his own. The addition of mechanical factory noise to several songs, as well as the more introspective tones and more intricate constructions, aligned the band more with darker industrial bands than with sunny technopop groups. Meanwhile, Gahan's vocals started hinting at a deeper, moodier tint, foreshadowing the gloomier, more complex, more angular path that was to follow.

A masterpiece! Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands ever and this is definitely one of their very best works. Contains the classics "People Are People" and my favorite DM song "Blasphemous Rumours." Some great songs that I wasn't expecting were "Something To Do", "Master and Servant", and "Lie To Me." Buy this if you are a cool person who wants to get on in the world.

as a long time fan of 80s music,you know dm, tears for fears(when kurt smith was still in the band), u2, kraftwerk(the group who sung "the model), to name a few, i always like dm's songs....i had the album on cassette tape but i don't know what happened to it.
well----i still remember like it was yesterday each time i hear it....that's why i say that it's beyond awesome!!!

As a long time Depeche Mode Fan, I must say that this is one of my favorites! On this tape my favorite song is Somebody. Each song on this tape moves me and makes me think about life. Overall, I would definately recommend this to any DM Fan!!!

BLUES BYTES Blues Today, Volume III is the third in a series of project albums from Arizona singer / songwriter Pete Thelen. The concept here is to gather groupings of Thelen's friends in the studio to record his original compositions. Like the previous collections, there is always at least one gem which makes the album worth finding. This time out it's a simple, acoustic number, "Wind Up From Mexico," featuring harmonica player and singer Lester Chambers (of Chambers Brothers fame) and guitarist K.K. Martin, the latter with some nice slide work. Making a return appearance to Blues Today, Volume III is legendary blues drummer Chico Chism, who handles the vocal work on the blues shuffle "Blues Today." The perpetually cool Chism doesn't sound completely comfortable with this number, but it still comes across well. Another keeper is an acoustic tune with an ole' timey feel, "Thumbnail Moon," featuring good fiddle by Jon Parry, vocals from Charlie Prazma and accordion from Mike King (the latter is a nice touch); this song ends on an interesting note, as the Marshall Vente Orchestra come in just as the song is fading out. Rena Haus, who also appeared on a previous Blues Today album, contributes tasteful vocals on the jazzy/gospel-ish "2ns Shoe," with strong tenor sax playing from Jim Massoth. Finally, one more strong cut, "Lovers," introduces female vocalist Carey Slade, a singer with just enough of a rasp in her voice. As prolific a recording artist as James Brown was in the 1960s, and as busy a touring machine as the one he led on the road was, he somehow found time to produce and work on numerous discs by other artists. The Godfather's R&B: James Brown's Productions 1962-67 has 22 such tracks, one of them (the 1966 single "New Breed [The Boo-Ga-Loo]") an instrumental actually credited to Brown himself, though the others are billed to other performers. In one sense, these extracurricular activities gave Brown additional chances to test and refine some ideas, especially as his music moved from more traditional soul to funk. As Dean Rudland's fine liner notes point out, this was especially the case from late 1963 to early 1965, when legal problems prevented Brown from recording often as a singer. From these standpoints, this CD is a valuable document of an aspect of his career that's usually overlooked. From a pure musical standpoint, however, the sounds are more historical than outstanding, and with a few exceptions not nearly as vital as the records Brown himself was putting out in the same era.
