(2 Customer Reviews)
On the late '80s release BLUEBIRD, Harris performs the poignant "Lonely Street," Johnny Cash's dreamlike "I Still Miss Someone," and her own sorrow-drenched tune, "A River For Him." Guest musicians such as Bonnie Raitt, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle, among others, support Harris's beautiful vocal performances.
Often called a new traditionalist, singer/songwriter Emmylou Harris has built a career on revamping classic honky-tonk music while striving to keep the idiom fresh and modern. Harris's music has roots. She knows the repertoire and is steeped in the history of North American folk and C&W music.

Bluebird
$9.49 You've got to know an album that opens with the line "I hear the clock a-tickin'" is going to demonstrate more than a passing interest in the process by which we grow older and, hopefully, wiser. COWGIRL'S PRAYER, Emmylou Harris' 17th studio album, presents its somber meditations on life and love in an appropriately lovely, quiet acoustic setting. The overall mood of this record is adult and reflective, but not melancholy. On the contrary, as she declares on the opening track, Harris adamantly and optimistically believes she still has "A Ways to Go." The album that follows amply supports her claim.
As usual, Harris exploits her encyclopedic knowledge of American music to come up with 11 great numbers, including songs by Tony Joe White ("High Powered Love"), Lucinda Williams ("Crescent City," an homage to New Orleans), Leonard Cohen ("Ballad ...

| | Emmylou Harris Brand New Dance CD (1990)
Bluebird
$10.49 1990's BRAND NEW DANCE, Emmylou Harris' 16th studio album, is another in a line of excellent efforts by one of modern country's finest artists. The album was Harris' first (excepting a Christmas album and a gospel record) to fail to produce a Top 40 country hit. Abandoned by the commercial country machine (or liberated from it, depending on your take), Harris would soon begin experimenting with her sound, resulting in a successful collaboration with rock producer Daniel Lanois (WRECKING BALL), and a tour with an edgy backing band (SPYBOY).
Nothing about BRAND NEW DANCE points to Harris' imminent commercial demise; the songs, playing, and performances here are typically impeccable and impassioned. Songwriter/husband Paul Kennerley contributes two of the album's best compositions, ...
| | Emmylou Harris Ballad Of Sally Rose CD (1985)
Bluebird
$11.19 This is one of the most intriguing albums of Emmylou Harris' career, and that is saying a lot. It marked the first album where she wrote or co-wrote all the songs, and the strength of the songwriting makes one wonder why she had never attempted it before. One can tell that this album is truly a labor of love, as it is a semi-autobiographical concept album that she also co-produced. It tells the story of a girl from a small town who gets taken under the wing of singer that ...

| | Valerie Carter Wild Child CD (1978) Japan
Bluebird
$25.55 Wild Child, Valerie Carter's 1978 follow-up to her debut Just a Stone Throw's Away, was clearly designed to broaden whatever audience she may have had gained in the prior year. Really, she didn't make that big of an impact in 1978 -- the debut peaked at 1982 and spent five weeks on the chart without generating a single hit -- but it was enough to hold out the possibility that she could go further. So James Newton Howard signed on as the producer, bringing in top-flight studio musicians like Jeffrey Porcaro and Jay Graydon to perform a set of songs from various sources -- ranging from songs Carter co-wrote with Newton Howard to covers of Andy Fairweather Low and Eugene Record. The result was a pleasant soft-rock affair with light disco touches and jazzy flourishes, but it failed to even chart and Carter soon disappeared from sight. In hindsight, it's not a huge surprise ...
