Christine McVie proved to once again be the anchor in Fleetwood Mac, as a number of her songs formed the core of BEHIND THE MASK. These include a number of songs co-written with new husband Carlos Quintana, like "Skies the Limit" and "Save Me" ... Full Description(the band's first Top 40 hit of the '90s). In addition to writing with Rick Vito, Stevie Nicks offered "Freedom," a song co-written with Heartbreaker Mike Campbell. These were her last studio contributions to Fleetwood Mac before her departure from the band three years later.
1990's BEHIND THE MASK found Fleetwood Mac entering their fourth decade of recording and was the band's first post-Lindsey Buckingham album. Replacing Buckingham were Billy Burnette, formerly of Mick Fleetwood's side project The Zoo, and ex-Bob Seger/Jackson Browne guitarist Rick Vito. These new members helped resurrect the Mac once more as they collaborated with old members in writing new songs. One of the best tracks on the album is the Tex-Mex "When The Sun Goes Down," co-written by Vito and Burnette.

1973 was a busy year for Fleetwood Mac, who continued to ply a mix of California country rock and blues at a time when glam ruled the roost in England. PENGUIN was one of two albums recorded that year and the band's first since parting ways with Danny Kirwan. Replacing him were English guitarist Bob Weston and singer Dave Walker, who the Mac stole from Savoy Brown after an American tour with that band. Due to a fair amount of drunk and disorderly behavior in the studio, Walker's contributions were minimal. He penned a country-flavored number called "The Derelict" and sings lead and plays harmonica on Jr. Walker's "(I'm A) Road Runner."
Despite this slight turmoil, the rest of PENGUIN is a wonderful mixed bag of material. Highlights include the upbeat, steel drum-tinged "Did You Ever Love Me," the ethereal "Night Watch" (featuring an uncredited Peter Green on guitar) and the slide guitar-drenched "Remember Me" (punctuated by Christine McVie's honey-sweet vocals). The real star of BARE TREES is guitarist/vocalist Danny Kirwan, who contributes the gorgeous guitar instrumental "Sunny Side of Heaven" and "Bare Trees," a funky rocker that was a massive FM radio staple throughout the seventies. It was new guitarist Bob Welch, however, who wrote and sang the modest hit "Sentimental Lady," a haunting, romantic ballad that remains one of Fleetwood Mac's finest moments. Christime McVie's "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love" hints at Fleetwood Mac's future direction. BARE TREES is a rewarding, well-crafted album that stands on its own merits rather than the Fleetwood Mac legend.

The formidable Fleetwood Mac lineup of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie emotionally imploded in 1987 after the release of TANGO IN THE NIGHT. After twelve years of endless touring, romantic melodrama, substance abuse and internal spats, the band deflated when Buckingham quit. Nicks, Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie pressed on, touring with guitarists Billy Burnette and Rick Vito. In 1990 the sextet released BEHIND THE MASK, but Nicks soon abandoned ship, no doubt alleviating the band's costume costs, but leaving a creative hole.
In 1995 Fleetwood Mac struggled back with TIME, featuring Christine, John, Fleetwood, ex-Traffic guitarist Dave Mason, Burnette, and vocalist Bekka Bramlett (daughter of Delaney and Bonnie). Although Christine's crisp songwriting and the steadfast Fleetwood-McVie rhythm section remained, the absence of Buckingham-Nicks is notable.
