1990's BRAND NEW DANCE, Emmylou Harris' 16th studio album, is another in a line of excellent efforts by one of modern country's finest artists. The album was Harris' first (excepting a Christmas album and a gospel record) to fail to produce a Top 40 country hit. Abandoned by the commercial country machine (or liberated from it, depending on your take), Harris would soon begin experimenting with her sound, resulting in a successful collaboration with rock producer Daniel Lanois (WRECKING BALL), and a tour with an edgy backing band (SPYBOY).
Nothing about BRAND NEW DANCE points to Harris' imminent commercial demise; the songs, playing, and performances here are typically impeccable and impassioned. Songwriter/husband Paul Kennerley contributes two of the album's best compositions, "Sweet Dreams of You" and the title track. Harris also plucks gems from the catalogs of Bruce Springsteen ("Tougher Than the Rest"), Robin and Lynda Williams ("Rollin' and Ramblin'"), and David Mallet ("Red Red Rose"). The album's overriding themes, yearning and heartache, dovetail nicely with the understated backing tracks and Harris' aching, quavering vocals. Those seeking evidence of modern country's demise might well start with the unjust fate this disc suffered.

Understated and Underrated! There is not a bad Emmylou Harris record period! Even "Gliding Bird" which Emmylou won the rights to never have re-released is a note-worthy effort. However, this album is achingly beautiful without a bad cut on it. "Tougher Than the Rest" is phenomenal! "Red, Red Rose" may be the most perfect love song ever recorded by Emmylou. Do yourself a favor, if you're a fan and don't have this, get it. You'll be glad you did. If you're not a fan and looking for a place to start as far as Emmylou is concerned--this is as good a place as any (though I also highly recommend "Pieces of the Sky", "Cowgirl's Prayer", and "Angel Band". This album is often under -rated but stands as one of Emmylou's finest recordings. Submitted by emmylousboy (Roanoke, VA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Going back to the Roots? This are a very special album.
It hold`s maby some of the most country songs Emmylou has ever done. But somehow also a lot of other stuff that doesnt fit those songs( They are good as well ).
The highligts on this cd is : " Weels of love" A realy good country song at it`s best. " Anyone else but you" also one fine country pearl. " rolling and rambling( The death of Hank Williams )" This is the first we can hear the collabration with her famousall acustic band. The Nashramblers. and the biggest higlight " Toughter tah the rest " The Bruse Sprinsteen song, better then the orginale.
