1990's BRAND NEW DANCE, Emmylou Harris' 16th studio album, is another in a line of excellent efforts by one of modern country's finest artists. The album was Harris' first (excepting a Christmas album and a gospel record) to fail to produce a Top 40 country hit. Abandoned by the commercial country machine (or liberated from it, depending on your take), Harris would soon begin experimenting with her sound, resulting in a successful collaboration with rock producer Daniel Lanois (WRECKING BALL), and a tour with an edgy backing band (SPYBOY).
Nothing about BRAND NEW DANCE points to Harris' imminent commercial demise; the songs, playing, and performances here are typically impeccable and impassioned. Songwriter/husband Paul Kennerley contributes two of the album's best compositions, "Sweet Dreams of You" and the title track. Harris also plucks gems from the catalogs of Bruce Springsteen ("Tougher Than the Rest"), Robin and Lynda Williams ("Rollin' and Ramblin'"), and David Mallet ("Red Red Rose"). The album's overriding themes, yearning and heartache, dovetail nicely with the understated backing tracks and Harris' aching, quavering vocals. Those seeking evidence of modern country's demise might well start with the unjust fate this disc suffered.

$11.79 It's no surprise that ALADDIN SANE and PIN UPS came out in the same year. Each drip with the seedy sexuality of London's late '60s sexual revolution. Yet, while PIN UPS was a mid-'60s sampling of influences--a glorified cover album--ALADDIN SANE was all Bowie.
Stepping out of the Ziggy Stardust shadow (Bowie would announce his temporary retirement from the stage later that year), ALADDIN SANE was the aftermath of Ziggy's visit, a brutal memoir of the drugs, sex and glamour that a young starlet could find at ...

Brand New Dance
$6.69 Zepubicle is Punky. Arty. Doomy. Trancey. Folky. Scrapey. Noisy. Pushy. Pully. Southy. Worldwise. Undercomfortable corners, a series of postcards from distant times and places, narrower and wider in scope than your everyday group recording. There are numerous and wonderfully supportive glitches that enhance the Technicolor antiqueness of it all. Listen as you would to a dribbling brook or crushing whirlpool. The music hovers at devastatingly quiet with the odd intrusion of, what’s that, yes, saturation through volume, restoring at last the much-missed art of dynamic range. Scientists Levitate Small Animals, on Solponticello Records, is our first official release after several years of ferment. Beautifully recorded by sound mind Tom Lewis live before an audience at Mercury Art Works gallery in Athens, Georgia, December 2006; mixed and mastered by Killick. Join us and celebrate.Zepubicle is made up of these interesting people:Killick of Athens, Georgia recontextualizes and lays bare the joyous friction of composition/improvisation, hi-fi/no-fi, academic/popular, good/bad/indifferent, groove/chance, intentional/inevitable, controlling chaos and chaos-ing control with precision abandon whilst exorcising exercises in favor of substantial contributions to the aural landscape. Killick is best known as a performer on his sympathetic stringed H'arpeggione, which he plays here with Appalachian Trance Metal aplomb. Marshall Marrotte of Atlanta, Georgia is an improvising musician, amateur musicologist and sonic contortionist. He performs as often as possible with an assortment of fellow raconteurs ...
