Glider album
$6.39 To simply call this album the apotheosis of the shoegazing scene--that brief epoch of U.K. indie-rock in which bands turned away from melodic clarity and instead chased after the incendiary rapture of sheer guitar-driven noise--would be an understatement. LOVELESS is the sound of what might've happened if Brian Eno had produced DAYDREAM NATION. Or perhaps it's the thundering ambience of SISTER recorded backwards. Whatever the case, rarely has such a pristine, hypnotic record had such an ungodly amount of sonic tonnage. Opening with four quick beats from some kind of skeletal kick-drum and then proceeding through eleven gleaming movements ...

Glider music CDs
$7.29 From its very first moments, My Bloody Valentine's ISN'T ANYTHING announces a musical revolution--the rough, insistent snare hits are joined by scalar bass runs, finally uniting and pausing to give way to a barely recognizable guitar swirl and up-close, unproduced vocals as a new form is born. The album's inimitable sonic collages sought to marry the brash experimentation and punk ethic of Sonic Youth with more pop-oriented production values and songcraft. Mastermind Kevin Shields's somewhat more streamlined European update on the noise-rock ethic may carry an intimidating sonic swagger, but beneath there beats the heart of a musical unit firmly grounded in pop.
The open-ended sonic stir and dreamy vocal of "Lose My Breath" create a swirling atmosphere, held aloft by a single, plodding acoustic guitar. This kaleidoscopic intensity reaches its apex in the stirring drama of "No More Sorry," a tightly-wound tune that pitches like a ship in a storm, battered by waves of harsh, ...

| | Belle & Sebastian Boy With The Arab Strap CD (1998)
Glider album
$9.95 After 1997's IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER made them critics' darlings, Scottish octet Belle And Sebastian ran straight into a series of label woes, and into the inevitable feeding frenzy that surrounds a free agent with their prodigious talents. Their experience with one label exec is detailed in "Seymour Stein" on THE BOY WITH THE ARAB STRAP, which finds the band building on the pastoral pop charms of SINISTER, adding a palpable layer of anger and an increasingly rich sonic palette to their painfully shy tales of despair.
Near-overnight success taught the band a lot. This album moves from their trademark confessional diary sketches (still in abundance, as on the disarmingly naive "Is It Wicked Not To Care," and the tender "Rollercoaster Ride") to genuine social criticism, as on the title track, a narrative meditation on Britain's pretensions and societal ills. "Chickfactor" pulls apart the banality the band encountered on arrival in ...
| | Chet Atkins Guitar Legend: The Rca Years CDs (2000)
Glider CD music
$21.25 Recorded between 1947 and 1978. Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle.
Digitally remastered by Elliott Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York).
It's safe to say that Chet Atkins invented what we know as the country guitar style. But this brilliantly programmed retrospective shows that Atkins was equally fluent in scores of other styles. There's not a dud to be found on GUITAR LEGEND: THE RCA YEARS. Each of these tracks, recorded between 1947 and 1978, is a delight. And Atkins makes it all look so easy.
GUITAR LEGENDą is nothing but highlights, though Atkins' stunning solo-guitar transcription of Dave Brubeck's signature piano tune "Take Five" stands out. So does "Centipede Boogie," featuring an up-the-neck solo that scores of rockabilly guitarists (and later George Harrison) were quick to appropriate. And the lightly swinging, tongue-in-cheek instrumental "Satan's Doll" suggests something a diabolical Duke Ellington might have composed.
Compilation producers: Rob Santos, Rich Kienzle.
Personnel includes: Chet ...

$6.05 Starting at the end, the album closes with an alternate version of Bob Dylan's classic "Shelter From The Storm." For Dylan fans, no other information is necessary. For the rest of you, consider this: Where else can you get Neil Young's "World On A String," Bruce Springsteen's "Secret Garden" and Nancy Wilson's "Sandy" on one album? To round things out, there are tracks from talented upstarts His Name Is Alive and power-pop diva Aimee Mann.
Yeah, we know, it's the soundtrack to another Tom Cruise movie, where America's favorite leading man plays another lovable mug who gets the girl, the glory and, of course, the money. But wait, don't run away yet! The movie was directed by former rock critic Cameron Crowe (he also directed "Singles"), and the songs he gathered together for it amount to an impressive portrait of the crises ...
