| | Ocean Blue Cerulean CD Ocean Blue Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Cerulean retains the glossy, thoroughly pretty ultra-pop feel of Ocean Blue's self-titled debut, but ends up showcasing some of the band's dreamier elements as well. The album comes across as a polished-over combination of the Housemartins and the Cocteau Twins, and it's certainly the most textured and dreamy of the group's releases. Given the band's strict adherence to completely melodic pop, though, that doesn't say a whole lot -- their smooth and pretty songs shine through everything they've done, and to say that Cerulean is less immediately accessible than Beneath the Rhythm & Sound only means that its production is a bit more sparkly and washed out. Ocean Blue are, in many respects, masters of soft, gentle pop, and Cerulean does nothing to stray from this skill. ~ Nitsuh Abebe
Recorded at Long View Farm and Blue Jay Recording Studios, Massachusetts.
The Ocean Blue: David Schelzel (vocals, guitar); Steve Lau (keyboards); Bobby Mittan (bass); Rob Minnig (drums, vocals).

| | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Cerulean
$14.49 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic ...
| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Cerulean
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs ...
| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Cerulean
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's ...
| | Bad Lieutenant Never Cry Another Tear CD (2009)

$8.79 With Peter Hook's departure in 2007, prospects for new material from New Order were looking increasingly dim, so the surprisingly workmanlike Bernard Sumner formed Bad Lieutenant to record his new songs. Sumner looked for help to various sources: latter-day ...
| | All On A Wintry Night: A Judy Collins Christmas CDs (2000)
Cerulean
$13.59 Judy Collins has enjoyed a long, popular career as a folk musician, so it is nice to see her flex her musical muscles and attempt some holiday favorites. Despite a few hammy moments, All on a Wintry Night is a first-class Christmas album, filled with beautiful performances and understated arrangements. Collins has a wonderful voice, and puts it to good use on tracks like "The Blizzard," where she manages to capture the magic and beauty of a snow storm in a simple piano ballad. She takes on lesser known carols such ...
| | Jonathan Richman Roadrunner, Roadrunner: The Beserkley Collection CD (2004)
Cerulean
$19.79 This 43-track, two-disc collection of music by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers features music recorded early in Richman's career, in the 1970s.
While Jonathan Richman has recorded for lots of different record labels over the years, both big and small, any fan of his music has to acknowledge the smarts and vision of the tiny Berserkley label, who for many years before the notion of "indie rock" had gained currency were willing to give Richman and his unusual (many would say "strange") musical perspective free reign at a time when he sounded not eccentric but downright freakish. Roadrunner, Roadrunner: The Berserkley Collection culls most of the high points ...
| | Jeff Lorber Flipside CD (2005)
Cerulean
$11.69 The legendary keyboardist started making his unique brand of old-school soul meets modern funk back when old-school was still in session, and the title of his third Narada Jazz disc is a throwback to that era, when the 45 RPM was king. Rather than overwhelm this time with hardcore commercial funk grooves and calculated radio hooks, Jeff Lorber is more into cool vibes and soulful atmospheres. Melodies have always been his gift, ...

| | Paul Weller Catch Flame CDs (2006) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Cerulean
$49.19 Another year, another live album. Paul Weller has turned out to be as predictable as the Rolling Stones in how he follows a new set of material with a live album, following every album since Wild Wood with a live record. Because of this it's hard not to superficially see 2006's Catch-Flame! Live at the Alexandra Palace as just another live album, but take the time to listen to Catch-Flame! and it soon reveals itself as a surprise every bit as bracing as Weller's 2005 studio album As Is Now: a record that doesn't sound all that different from its predecessor, at least on the surface, but underneath that surface, it's apparent that Weller's fire is again burning intensely. There's a vigor and vitality to this performance that eclipses all his other live solo albums; it's as kinetic as early Jam, but without abandoning the Traffic-inspired, jam-heavy aesthetic that marked his solo work. As such, it's satisfying both as an exciting, energetic live album and as one to savor, to really enjoy the interplay between the musicians, and it makes Catch-Flame! something far more than another Weller live album; indeed, it makes it closer to being the live Weller album instead of just another live record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
