Though the title of this compilation of songs from '70s blaxploitation movies might at first raise a few amused eyebrows, judgment for PIMPS, PLAYERS AND PRIVATE EYES is best reserved until you've taken a closer look at the track listing. Some of the finest and most popular soul singers of the era--from Bobby Womack to the Impressions--are presented here in all their afro-centric, mack-daddy glory.

The sweeping strings, grand orchestrations, and gospel-like choruses of female back-up singers may make it difficult to swallow some of the songs without a hearty grain of irony. But many of these tracks--such as Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," Issac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft," and Curtis Mayfield's incomparable "Pusherman"--do much more than evoke groovy days of yore. There are genuine powerhouse performances here, vocal and instrumental takes characterized by a deep emotional intensity rarely matched in contemporary black urban music. For a window into the culture of another decade and an outstanding sampler of great soul music, it's hard to do better than PIMPS, PLAYERS AND PRIVATE EYES.
