Among Emmylou Harris' many extraordinary gifts has always been her genuine enthusiasm for promoting the talents of others. Whether in her selection of material to sing or musicians to perform alongside her, Harris is unfailingly generous in spotlighting those who create the music she loves. This quality is abundantly evident on AT THE RYMAN, the 1992 live album Harris recorded at country's legendary landmark, the onetime home of the Grand Old Opry. Harris uses the concert to pay tribute to country music history's many strands and also to showcase the extraordinary musicianship of her backing band, the Nash Ramblers.
The generous set reaches all the way back to the 19th century for Stephen Foster's "Hard Times," also touching on cowboy songs ("Cattle Call," "Montana Cowgirl"), honky tonk ("Half As Much"), gospel ("Get Up, John"), bluegrass ("Walls of Time"), and modern traditionalism ("Guitar Town"). Harris also manages to nod toward rock (Bruce Springsteen's "Mansion on the Hill," John Fogerty's "Lodi") without breaking stride. Throughout, her band provide seamless, effortlessly virtuosic support. AT THE RYMAN is a great album from one of modern country's greatest artists.
Recorded live at the original Grand Ole Opry building (the Ryman Auditorium) from April 30, 1991 to May 2, 1991.

At The Ryman album
$9.49 You've got to know an album that opens with the line "I hear the clock a-tickin'" is going to demonstrate more than a passing interest in the process by which we grow older and, hopefully, wiser. COWGIRL'S PRAYER, Emmylou Harris' 17th studio album, presents its somber meditations on life and love in an appropriately lovely, quiet acoustic setting. The overall mood of this record is adult and reflective, but not melancholy. On the contrary, as she declares on the opening track, Harris adamantly and optimistically believes she still has "A Ways to Go." The album that follows amply supports her claim.
As usual, Harris exploits her encyclopedic knowledge of American music to come up with 11 great numbers, including ...

WRECKING BALL won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Not many modern country legends have traveled through their careers with the wherewithal, grace and vision of Emmylou Harris. More than twenty years after helping Gram Parsons reinvent country with so-called "Cosmic American music," Harris is still tinkering with the genre's songwriting conventions and the sounds she uses to illustrate the words she sings. Enter Daniel Lanois: erstwhile protege of Brian Eno, producer to U2, Bob Dylan and Robbie Robertson, and a visionary artist in his own right who mixes the Louisiana music of his Acadian ancestry with the ambient settings of his modernist mentor. On WRECKING BALL, he is the perfect foil for Harris' spiritual explorations, casting her ...

At The Ryman album
$11.79 This is one of the most intriguing albums of Emmylou Harris' career, and that is saying a lot. It marked the first album where she wrote or co-wrote all the songs, and the strength of the songwriting makes one wonder why she had never attempted it before. One can tell that this album is truly a labor of love, as it is a semi-autobiographical concept album that she also co-produced. It tells the story of a girl from a small town who gets taken under the wing of singer that takes her (and her angelic voice) out on the road. (The story mirrors her relationship with Gram Parsons, although it is a fictional account of the life of another woman.) As a concept album, it only partly holds together; one must read the liner notes to get a true feeling for the story. However, Emmylou Harris sounds particularly inspired, and the songs themselves are strong ...
