Neil Young hit yet another creative peak in the 1990s, and WELD, a blisteringly distorted album, was the end result. Out-grunging everybody with his extraordinary backing band, Crazy Horse, Young gives songs like "Cortez The Killer" and his gentle rocker, 1968's "Cinnamon Girl," new life. The excitement level of this set is extraordinary, and the gut-wrenching volume only ignites the desire for more.

Weld Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) don't spook the horse! Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I was just a kid when this came out and I bought it and I still get off when I hear "Like A Hurricane". Like another reviewer said, "Rockin' In The Free World" lost something in translation from the studio to this album, its still neil young and crazy horse, rough sloppy and out of tune in a wonderful way, yet I'd take the live version from his "saturday night live" appearance around that time if I could find it, all in all this is a great set, a great companion to "Ragged Glory". You can't go wrong with the horse, some of my favorite albums are of Neil's Crazy Horse albums, from the '60's on down through the ages Submitted by chubbsdarcy (La Tabatiere, Qc. Very Strong This album is very heavy, when compared to 'Live Rust', at least. 'crime in the city' is the best song here but there are great versions of '...Rust' tracks like 'Cinnamon Girl', 'Hey hey, my my' and 'Cortez the killer'. A big disappointment for me here is the lacklustre version of 'Rockin in the free world', unusually lacking the fire of the studio version. Submitted by S J (Woking) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Neil Cranks It Up... Recorded on the back of the Ragged Glory Tour Weld is a pure distorted noise fest which is sure to blow your speakers at high volumes. Though rather than just being overtly relentless there is enough on this double album to keep the listener interested including a blistering electric version of "Crime In The City" from the Freedom album and an excellent version of "Cinnamon Girl" which is a Neil and Crazy Horse classic, and again is well performed. Other highlights include the atmospheric and hypnotic "Like A Hurricane" which outstrips the previous live version on the Live Rust album in sheer power and a song which is always welcomed on a live release with that big looping riff being pumped out by the Crazy Horse as Young blazes away on his Les Paul. Though "Rockin' In The Free World" sounds quite tame for some reason compared to its Freedom counterpart, and the cover of Dylans's "Blowing In The Wind" (which replaced "Mother Earth: A Natural Anthem" on the tour) is simply annoying as Young drags politics and the Gulf war into view. Weld remains a good live album on a tour which became so very loud it made Neil go back to doing some country music ( Harvest Moon) and wind down the volume for a while.

Weld
$18.69 Covering the years between 1966-1976, DECADE is a solid overview that shows off the many sides of the always iconoclastic Neil Young. Starting with Young's work in Buffalo Springfield, some of the nuggets include the psychedelic calliope that is "Down To The Wire" and the fuzz guitar/Motown-inspired "Mr. Soul." Throughout these ten years of recordings, Young constantly dug deep, touching on controversial topics be it his CSN&Y masterpiece about the student massacre at Kent State ("Ohio"), compositions dealing with the ups and downs of the drug culture ("Needle And The Damage Done," "Tonight's The Night") or history's dark chapters of racial injustice ("Cortez The Killer," "Southern Man").
Neil Young's choice of accompanists also allowed him to explore many different avenues. Crazy ...
| | Neil Young Comes A Time CD (1978)
Weld
$9.15 With steel guitars, fiddles and lots of acoustic guitars, this low-key folk-rock album harks back to Young's great AFTER THE GOLD RUSH-HARVEST period, and if it doesn't measure up that's only because of the ridiculously high standards the earlier albums set. Taken by itself, COMES A TIME is a fine collection, anchored by the timeless wonderment of the title song; a cover of Ian & Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds," and the nearly indescribable "Look Out For My Love," which is either a love song, a threat or both.
COMES A TIME also features "Lotta Love," which was released simultaneously by Nicolette Larson and was a major hit for her. Larson doesn't sing on Young's version, but her background vocals distinguish much of the rest of COMES A TIME. Crazy Horse puts in an unusually low-key--but typically warm and ragged--appearance on two songs, "Look Out For My Love" and "Lotta Love."

| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Weld
$9.19 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased ...
