Neil Young hit yet another creative peak in the 1990s, and WELD, a blisteringly distorted album, was the end result. Out-grunging everybody with his extraordinary backing band, Crazy Horse, Young gives songs like "Cortez The Killer" and his gentle rocker, 1968's "Cinnamon Girl," new life. The excitement level of this set is extraordinary, and the gut-wrenching volume only ignites the desire for more.

Weld Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) don't spook the horse! Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I was just a kid when this came out and I bought it and I still get off when I hear "Like A Hurricane". Like another reviewer said, "Rockin' In The Free World" lost something in translation from the studio to this album, its still neil young and crazy horse, rough sloppy and out of tune in a wonderful way, yet I'd take the live version from his "saturday night live" appearance around that time if I could find it, all in all this is a great set, a great companion to "Ragged Glory". You can't go wrong with the horse, some of my favorite albums are of Neil's Crazy Horse albums, from the '60's on down through the ages Submitted by chubbsdarcy (La Tabatiere, Qc. Very Strong This album is very heavy, when compared to 'Live Rust', at least. 'crime in the city' is the best song here but there are great versions of '...Rust' tracks like 'Cinnamon Girl', 'Hey hey, my my' and 'Cortez the killer'. A big disappointment for me here is the lacklustre version of 'Rockin in the free world', unusually lacking the fire of the studio version. Submitted by S J (Woking) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Neil Cranks It Up... Recorded on the back of the Ragged Glory Tour Weld is a pure distorted noise fest which is sure to blow your speakers at high volumes. Though rather than just being overtly relentless there is enough on this double album to keep the listener interested including a blistering electric version of "Crime In The City" from the Freedom album and an excellent version of "Cinnamon Girl" which is a Neil and Crazy Horse classic, and again is well performed. Other highlights include the atmospheric and hypnotic "Like A Hurricane" which outstrips the previous live version on the Live Rust album in sheer power and a song which is always welcomed on a live release with that big looping riff being pumped out by the Crazy Horse as Young blazes away on his Les Paul. Though "Rockin' In The Free World" sounds quite tame for some reason compared to its Freedom counterpart, and the cover of Dylans's "Blowing In The Wind" (which replaced "Mother Earth: A Natural Anthem" on the tour) is simply annoying as Young drags politics and the Gulf war into view. Weld remains a good live album on a tour which became so very loud it made Neil go back to doing some country music ( Harvest Moon) and wind down the volume for a while.

Weld album
$9.89 In the fall of 1978, Neil Young and Crazy Horse undertook a tour that mixed in songs off of what became RUST NEVER SLEEPS with a variety of older material. The stage set included oversize amps and a road crew cloaked not unlike Star Wars' Jawas, making this tour's distinctions as visual as they were aural. The film and recording of this tour were released ...

Weld CD music
$6.35 Neil Young and Crazy Horse came roaring into the 1990s astride a powerful beast named RAGGED GLORY. During this time, Young was being heralded as the "Godfather of Grunge," and this album went a long way towards reinforcing this moniker. Never before had heavy guitar crunch swung in such a melodic and forceful way.
With the slightest hint of a twang and some relaxed harmonizing, "Country Home" chugs ...

BROKEN ARROW was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
BROKEN ARROW is the third straight album on which Neil Young has splattered loud electric-guitar notes all over his folk-rock melancholy. You'd have to go back to Young's amazing mid-1970s records to find a similar streak, and you'd have to go back just as far to find Young in a groove this consistent, this good. In his '90s incarnation, Young seems to be upping the ante each go-round. It's as if he's completely enveloped in his own noise, and taking great pleasure in seeing just how much he can get away with. The first three songs on BROKEN ARROW are nearly a half-hour long between them, and they reach that length through long, scratchy, meandering solos that evoke both jazz and punk-rock (think Sonic Youth) in their simultaneous bid to be transcendent and noisy. In "Loose Change," Young solos for a miraculous six-and-a-half minutes over a single chord.
By the end of the third song, Young appears emotionally spent, ...

Weld album
$9.89 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
The first thing you hear on this two-disc live album is Young's voice wryly asserting that "It all sounds the same...It's all one song." While this self-effacing assessment of the Young/Crazy Horse oeuvre echoes the feeling of many critics, on YEAR OF THE HORSE, recorded in several cities during the band's 1996 world tour, nothing could be further from the truth.
Young's caveman-on-acid guitar solos and the primal fury of Crazy Horse can still topple mountains. And Young's choice of material leans more toward obscure gems like "When Your Lonely Heart ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Weld CD music
$8.59 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to ...
