HATFUL OF HOLLOW includes songs recorded live for BBC Radio 1.
A composite of radio sessions and sundry early singles, HATFUL OF HOLLOW provides an alternative snapshot of the Smiths' early career. Compiled in the wake of their debut album, it exhibited all of their considerable strengths, in particular Johnny Marr's ringing, expressive guitarwork. The riff he creates on 'How Soon Is Now' is thoroughly captivating. Vocalist Morrissey's distinctive croon and solipsistic lyrics are already unique and give the group its originality. At times ironic, at others wistful (as on 'Back To The Old House'), he takes the Smiths into new areas of expression and his contrasting visions are fully expressed herein.

The Smiths: Hatful Of Hollow The Smiths second album, Hatful Of Hollow, is definitely a must-have. This album contains pretty much live recordings, songs off of the debut album, and the band's three new singles. This album is worth it alone for Johnny Marr's brilliant guitar work in the BBC Sessions (consisting of John Peel 9/21/83 and Kid Jensen 4/7/83). You'll love "How Soon Is Now?", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", and especially the BBC sessions. This album is one to pick up, and if you don't own it, pick it up now. Submitted by MozMarr522 ("Mt. A Wonderful Introduction! This is the first Smiths album I listened, and it provides a superb introduction to the band. It has many really classic songs, like How Soon Is Now, and William It Was Really Nothing, and also interesting BBC Session versions of some great songs off the first LP. Excellent! Hatful Of Hollow
$10.59 This self-titled opening salvo of the Smiths' four-year war with mediocrity stands proud as one of the era's most innovative and unique works. Flying in the face of the pomp and artifice that prevailed in pop music at the time, the Smiths raged against their makeup- wearing, synth-playing contemporaries and squarely put rock back on the agenda. Guitarist Johnny Marr married the tunesmanship and harmonic richness of his Motown heroes with the rage of punk, while Morrissey's bedroom confessionals were catnip to England's (and later the world's) disenfranchised youth.
THE SMITHS demanded, and received, instant attention, ...
| | Smiths Meat Is Murder CD (1985)
Hatful Of Hollow
$10.75 MEAT IS MURDER found the Smiths further honing their craft, tightening and brightening their sound. Unlikely heroes at home in the UK, and starting to break through the cracks in the States, they latched inextricably onto a generation of youth on a global scale with this album, making vegetarians and animal-rights activists out of more than a few of their overcoat-wearing devotees. The most straight-ahead of the Smiths' albums in terms of production, MEAT IS MURDER is a rootsy effort, driven largely by Johnny Marr's lush acoustic guitar arrangements.
The album, however, is far from folky. While the frenetic ...
| | Smiths Queen Is Dead CD (1986)
Hatful Of Hollow
$11.19 Arguably the Smiths' masterpiece, THE QUEEN IS DEAD found the band at the artistic apex of a career that knew few lows. More than any of their other albums, THE QUEEN IS DEAD represents the elegance, craftsmanship and humor for which the Smiths are remembered. Opening the album, the explosive title track is filled with vintage punk-era iconoclastic rage, wherein Morrissey tears at the very fabric of the British monarchy atop the howling feedback and swirling chords of Johnny Marr and the pounding ...
| | Smiths Louder Than Bombs CD (1987)
Hatful Of Hollow
$10.69 LOUDER THAN BOMBS contains 24 songs, including 12 from the UK compilation of B-sides and singles THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN.
Compiled mostly from tracks on the two UK releases HATFUL OF HOLLOW and THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN, LOUDER THAN BOMBS is one of the best examples of the recorded genius of the Smiths. While the band's album releases were always anxiously awaited and well received, their most ...
| | Smiths Strangeways, Here We Come CD (1987)
Hatful Of Hollow
$9.15 The Smiths' underrated and unjustly maligned swan song found the band experimenting with sound and arrangement more than ever before. From the epic instrumental introduction to "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" to the dark instrumentation of "Death Of A Disco Dancer," STRANGEWAYS HERE WE COME is a sonically rich album, filled with extremes and surprises. Among its many highlights are its signature tune "Girlfriend In A Coma," and the stingingly autobiographical "Paint A Vulgar Picture," which also happens to contain one of the most inspired, melodic guitar ...

| | Paul Simon There Goes Rhymin' Simon CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Hatful Of Hollow
$6.55 Building on the solid reputation of Simon & Garfunkel and the genre-exploring experiments of his solo debut, Paul Simon released this exceptional collection of songs in 1973. Simon seems to revel in his newfound solo freedom here, expanding his folk-rock palette to include gospel, reggae, R&B, and Dixieland, ratcheting up production values, and performing with great authority and confidence. That confidence is supported by some of the artist's finest and most focused compositions, including the jangly, exuberant "Kodachrome," a metaphor for the subjectivity of memory, the beautiful acoustic ballad "American Tune," ...
