Musician (4/93, p.85) - "...like all great pop, the Goo Goos stand cliches on their head, while the magnetic hooks suck you in and make it all sound new again...marks a quantum leap over their thrash beginnings, a move akin to the Replacements breakthrough record LET IT BE..." the goo's at their best this is the boys from buffalo at their best, solid songs without the commerciality of "a boy named goo" or "dizzy up the girl"
though they are often accused of being a replacements clone (not without some validity) this album contains solid tracks like "cuz your gone", "falling down", "so far away" and "stop the world". "we are the normal" foreshadows their move into acoustic balladry that never quite gets into the sappy mode (though it did invite more replacements comparisons as it was co written by paul westerberg). some of the songs do have a similar feel to them, but as any fan of bands like boston or ac/dc (who get the same rap)will tell you, too much of a good thing is better than not enough Submitted by a reviewer (lewiston ny) Was This Review Helpful? $8.49 All songs written by John Rzeznik or Goo Goo Dolls except "Disconnected" (Mann/Piranha/Secrist/Sinister) and "Slave Girl" (M. Blood/J. Jakimyszyn).
A BOY NAMED GOO shows that the Goo Goo Dolls have soaked up all the elements necessary to make them a great guitar band. The album's title clearly harkens back to Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" and its narrator's search for the people who named him; but the Goo Goo Dolls aren't taking that path. They already know their past (straight-ahead post-punk), and A BOY NAMED GOO plots out their present.
With a smart-alec, bar-band approach reminiscent of the Replacements, the Goo Goo Dolls rage about being "Disconnected"--that "someone pulled the plug." They sound worried on "Long Way Down," realizing that "I don't think I'll make it on my own." "Burnin' Up" offers another key to the Goo Goo Dolls' garage sound by adding a smidgeon of Husker Du (the Bob Mould guitar chimes and Grant Hart's melodic vocal sense are properly reproduced). But it's on the acoustic "Name" that the Dolls' own context emerges. The song complains about "growing up way too fast" in a culture where everything seems borrowed and "re-runs are our history."
This is what makes the Goo Goo Dolls admirable. They're thoroughly aware of the repetition within today's guitar-rock, and use only the good pieces to evaluate the present. A BOY NAMED GOO shows a band completely aware of their surroundings, and ...
| | Goo Goo Dolls Dizzy Up The Girl CD (1998)
Superstar Car Wash songs
$10.65 "Iris" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Black Balloon" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
On first hearing, the Goo Goo Dolls sound like the Replacements' distant cousins, full of trashy rock bravado tempered by intelligent, often tender lyricism and a penchant for combining ringing acoustic guitars with dirtier sounds for a rich sonic stew. In fact, DIZZY UP THE GIRL finds the Dolls moving further away from the Replacements sound than ever before, with a definite '90s influence to the proceedings. The group's ...
| | Goo Goo Dolls What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art & Commerce CD (2001)
Superstar Car Wash album
$9.45 Its musical merits notwithstanding, this best-of compilation may just be the first of its kind in that the songs are arranged in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent (in this case "Bulletproof," from 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL). In any case, this aural document of the Doll's 15-year recording career (interesting historical perspective: that's twice as long as the Beatles) is an all but perfect snapshot of their ability to combine pop hooks, punk guitars, and blue-collar angst into one passionate, accessible package.
The collection itself is impeccably crafted. The song selection is just about ideal (although fans may bemoan the absence of "Long Way Down," from A BOY NAMED GOO). Nearly everything has been remixed (which means the older songs have more or less the same aural sheen as the more expensively ...

When the Goo Goo Dolls solidified their place in the pop mainstream with 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL, one of the casualties was frontman Johnny Rzeznik's marriage. For the band's 2002 follow-up GUTTERFLOWER, Rzeznik channeled his feelings into a set of songs steeped in the Goo's mastery of hook-ridden, rock-edged pop. Lines like "How does it feel when you're out on your own/And now it's too late ...
