Released after Prince announced his retirement and his intention of never using the name "Prince" again, Come is something of a surprise: an album of reportedly all new material, released by "Prince," not "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince." After listening to Come, its purpose becomes clear -- it's a record fulfilling a contract, nothing more and nothing less. Some of the songs are good, but there's nothing on Come that Prince hasn't done before; he even sounds bored on certain tracks. On top of that, the album has no obvious singles, making it a nightmare to sell. Not surprisingly, the album flopped. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine For the artist intermittently known as Prince, the notion of spiritual death and rebirth has become the predominant theme in his work. Thus on the track "Solo," with its eerie liturgical ambience, sampled thunder and moody harp, Prince sings a keening falsetto confession: "Solo, my name is no one." Accepting all that as a given, this richly orchestrated set has the exploratory sound and feel of a classic Prince album, except that COME seems to be an attempt to explicate his legend once and for all ("Letitgo"), to make way for a new...well, your guess is a good as ours. The title tune mixes carnal and spiritual imagery in the classic Prince manner, as that ecstatic voice testifies over jazzy horns, big-band chord changes and a fat, greasy backbeat ("If you had a chance to see the future, would you try?"). Elsewhere, the sampled waves which open and close COME act as a recurring leitmotif, as Prince explores a series of jumpy dance grooves ("Pheromone" and "Loose!"), a moody tale of child abuse ("Papa"), a strutting R&B/hiphop anthem ("Race"), a brassy gospel-blues confessional ("Dark") and an explicit girl-guitar ecstasy ("Orgasm"). On COME, Prince appears before us one last time, a reminder of things past, a harbinger of revolutions to come. The Source (12/94, p.82) - "...a classic Prince album worthy of FOR YOU, 1999, and DIRTY MIND (which it's most suggestive of)...COME effectively serves as one of his personal diaries....dark, brooding, beautiful and freaky..." Melody Maker (8/13/94, p.35) - Recommended - "...Like every album he ever made...it's precisely 75 per cent divine..." NME (Magazine) (8/13/94, p.45) - 7 - Very Good - "...infuriating at times....he's encouraged people to buy into his carefully-manicured mystique....he's unwittingly upheld certain stereotypes--the equation black=sex--whilst trying to burn them down; and COME is fitting..." Come Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) an absolute weird and strange album This album can truly take the word deep to a whole new level. the title track "come" is one of my favorites to listen to on this cd as well as "dark", "letitgo" and the guitar riffs on the utterly, down to the core very wild and very freaky "orgasm". $7.55 PiL's fourth album took three years to reach fruition, much of this time spent gigging and changing personnel. The initial recordings of the follow-up to The Flowers of Romance included the nucleus of Lydon and Keith Levene; Martin Atkins was asked to stay on board, and he brought bassist Pete Jones with him, a mate who was helping him out with his own Brian Brain project. After those initial sessions and a few shows, both Levene and Jones quit within a month of each other. Lydon then recruited the majority of a lounge act spotted at a New Jersey Holiday Inn and toured with them, playing a set heavy on the new material. After touring, Lydon and Atkins wiped Jones and Levene off the tapes for the new record, employing faceless session musicians to fill in. The upheaval resulted in one of Lydon's worst outings, the most tentative and least powerful of PiL's recordings. A thin, shrill, wheezing horn section replaces much of Levene's guitar, and the basslines sound like Flea without the passion and chops. "This Is Not a Love Song," though accessible enough for the charts, is best left in the year of its origin. Surprisingly for Lydon, the colorful tune has a simple beat and is easy to dance to, but lacks guts. "The Pardon," like a couple other songs on the record, sounds like a bad Flowers of Romance outtake with "modern" production. With Atkins' relentless clippity-cloppity drums and Lydon's bite-free stream-of-consciousness rambling, it eventually fades into the background as a nagging drone. Closer "The Order of Death" saves This Is What You Want... from being a total wreck, a moody instrumental with a repetitive vocal hook from Lydon and a creepy synth line. Recorded for Cop Killer, a movie starring Harvey Keitel and Lydon himself, it's fittingly soundtrack-ish. (The song didn't end up being used in the movie.) Notably, Levene, who at that point owned half of the Public Image Limited name, released the version of This Is What You Want... with him and Jones present as the pseudo-bootleg Commercial Zone, on the short-lived PIL Records. It actually preceded the official version's release by months, and a second issue followed later in the year with a slightly different track listing. ~ Andy Kellman PiL's fourth album took three years to reach fruition for a number of reasons. The initial recordings included the nucleus of John Lydon and Keith Levene; Martin Atkins was asked to stay, bringing bassist Pete Jones to help out. After those sessions and a few shows, both Levene and Jones exited. Lydon recruited a lounge act spotted at a New Jersey hotel and took them on tour. Upon re-entering the studio, Lydon and Atkins wiped the departed members off the tapes from the prior recordings, employing faceless ...
| | Lil Wayne Tha Carter Vol. 2 CD (2005)
Come
$10.45 A one-time member of New Orleans's Hot Boys, rapper Lil Wayne attained a new level of confidence and skill on 2004's THA CARTER. That album featured only a few guest shots (as opposed to typically star-studded hip-hop records), and this 2005 sequel once again keeps things focused on Wayne, with the MC flying solo on almost every track. This uncluttered scenario, which relies on a spare, yet distinctly Cash Money-style musical backdrop, gives Wayne the freedom to let his laid-back rhymes stretch out, as best revealed on the ominous "Fireman" and the boastful "Best Rapper Alive." Clearly Wayne knows how to work a winning concept, since THA CARTER II stays true to both its predecessor and the relentless, unapologetic spirit of Southern rap. Although his first studio album in three years has been long-awaited and repeatedly delayed, Lil Wayne has been anything but absent. Since THA CARTER II, Weezy has left an impressive mass of recordings--from mixtapes (authorized and otherwise) to guest appearances--in his wake as he blusters through the rap industry. In the third installment of the THA CARTER series, Wayne shows he's earned the right to ego-trip as he lets his off-kilter flow, freak-out lyrics, and vocal acrobatics run wild over 16 tracks. Scaling the heights of hubris on "Dr. Carter," he plays an MC/doctor treating a certain music genre diagnosed as lifeless and closes with a quintessential Weezy snarl: "Welcome back hip-hop/I saved your life." Wayne then shifts to alien-mode for the E.T.-inspired "Phone Home." Later on, he details his sexual conquest of a female cop on "Ms. Officer." As expected, THA CARTER III is rife with big name producers (The Alchemist, Kanye West, Wyclef Jean, David Banner, Swizz Beatz, will.i.am) ...
