Vibe (3/95, p.106) - "...His writing...is eerie, liquid, yet swinging in a major way....The album points to the stars while paying homage to the Middle Passage--trumpeter Eddie Henderson contributes exquisitely to the mood with several spacey-ass solos that make more earthbound conceptions of the horn sound almost morbid in comparison..." Herbie Hancock Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings Songs Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Easy to Lose Yourself In for Long Stretches I find the one thread that links all of Herbie Hancock's diverse music, from the early Blue Note albums to the great Miles bands to this Warner Bros. era to VSOP to jazz-funk to snyth-disco, is the feeling that you can lose yourself completely in it. There's a broad sweep, an expansive texture; it's partly the way he voices chords on the piano, open and impressionistic, but there's more to it than that. On this collection, which includes all three of the albums he recorded for Warner Brothers in the early 70s (on two CDs), Herbie gets that expansive sound by playing with different arrangements of instruments and song forms. The music from the first album (Fat Albert Rotunda) is funky, danceable, just nice tight grooves and simple improv (from the earliest days of jazz-funk, mind you; nothing derivative here!). The next two albums, Mwandishi and Crossings, retain the groove in the bottom end (bass, drums, piano accompinament) but the songs spread out. Horns, reeds and piano play with snatches of melody for long, wistful stretches. In the hands of some bandleaders, this meandering might have less merit; but with Hancock in charge, that yearning, mystical quality is always there. While not all of these tracks are memorable for me, the texture of this entire collection is smooth and mesmerizing, start to finish. The price is right, and the packaging is good (great photos, interesting new essay by Blumenthal just for this repackaging). If you like Herbie's 60s stuff, if you also enjoy funky jazz or spacy jam sessions like In a Silent Way, you'll enjoy this. If you mostly think of Hancock as the Headhunters leader, you might be disappointed. Submitted by Keith (San Jose, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings
$43.49 Recorded in the U.S. and the U.K. between May 1974 and December 28, 1978. Includes liner notes by John McDermott
Chock-full of blistering live performances drawn exclusively from the Tulsa-based band Clapton used during the "me" decade, CROSSROADS 2 is the antidote to his mostly laid-back, sleepy studio performances of the era.
With nearly 5 hours of music spread over 4 discs, CROSSROADS 2 never becomes redundant or too much of a good thing--a true testament to the power and fury of Clapton's excellent songs and fiery verve. Smoky vocals and truly inspired guitar workouts serve both his well-known hits and the sometimes obscure blues-songs he chooses. A 24-minute medley duet with Carlos Santana from '75 burns with passion and excitement. The album is bookended with 4 studio outtakes, with 1974's "Walkin' Down The Road" and "Cryin"--recorded four years later with the nucleus of Slowhand's next band--reflecting a more contemplative mood. A terrific set that entertains, surprises and delights, and an essential item that any Clapton connoiseur will treasure.
CROSSROADS 2 is a 4-CD box set consisting ...
| | Herbie Hancock Prisoner CD (1969) Remastered
Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings
$9.45 Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (2000, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey).
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
There is no mistaking the influence of the great Gil Evans on Herbie Hancock's THE PRISONER. The dark textures, the creative voicings, and the way in which Hancock assembles his arrangements are evocative of Evans' work with the pianist's former boss, Miles Davis. However, Hancock does more than pay homage here, as he exercises yet another aspect of his exceptional musicianship and applies it to the large ensemble format he had begun to approach on his previous date, SPEAK LIKE A CHILD.
THE PRISONER is significant for other reasons; for one, it was recorded at the beginning of a great upheaval in jazz, when the form incorporated the adoption of electric instruments and rock-influenced rhythms in a move towards the fusion of the '70s. Yet, although Hancock uses an electric piano on some pieces, the session is mostly a performance of beautifully crafted acoustic ...

There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
