"The Seventh Seal" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. What happens when rowdy rockers get older? Hopefully, if they're like Eddie, Sammy and the boys, they can achieve a BALANCE between the fire from ... Full Descriptiontheir youth and the more serious demands of maturing rock stars.
The struggle for BALANCE is apparent in songs about strained relationships, drugs and greed. The topics of Sammy's lyrics range from personal turmoil ("I need a change, I need it quick before it makes me sick...I don't like what I've been told I'm feelin'") to apocalyptic doom ("Broken now I can't help but feel someone cracked the seventh seal"). However, the band still kicks when Sammy shouts about the virtues of drugs and avarice in "Amsterdam" and "Big Fat Money."
Supporting this are Eddie's familiar warm tones and Alex's big-footed stomp. Tune into "Amsterdam" to hear Eddie's goofy, bearded grin, and that good-feelin' Van Halen rock. Yet although they offer three instrumental tracks, they no longer flaunt unbridled talent just because it's there. Instead of using songs as mere vehicles for instrumental pyrotechnics, the Van Halen virtuosity has been balanced out to serve the song, and it's a fine BALANCE.
Van Halen: Sammy Hagar (vocals); Edward Van Halen (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: The Monks Of Gyuro Tantric University (vocals).
Rolling Stone (3/23/95, p.122) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...BALANCE is pro forma pomp rock--but with VH in top form, power aplenty remains in their slick machine....Gleefully, [Sammy Hagar] surfs Eddie's guitar waves, apparently getting as much kick as any fan does when they crash and tumble the studio walls--and that's a kick indeed..." Very good cd. Overall, I really liked this album. Maybe not their best, but CERTAINLY not their worst. Unlike most others, I do like 'Big Fat Money' though. One of my favorites, in fact, on the album. Submitted by Sethro Tull (UTAH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Ok... This album is probably their worst since Fair Warning. It features powerful good rock songs, but sappy ballads and the awful Big Fat Money was a disappointment to all VH fans, making this the cd not ta get. The album is very addictive at first, but you lose interest. And why did eddie cut his hair? Perfect example of bad change Submitted by Zach (Lockport IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Balance album
$14.45 If the term "journeyman" could be applied to a band, it would be a good fit for UFO. Since 1969, the band has consistently delivered solid albums of no-nonsense hard rock, occasionally dipping into space rock, AOR, and metal along the way. THE VISITOR features original vocalist Phil Mogg and original drummer Andy Parker, along with guitar shredder legend Vinnie Moore (original bassist Pete Way was unable to participate due to health issues). True to form, the album is full of energetic, straight-ahead ...

$16.09 Prince has never shied away from ambitious projects, and 2009's LOTUSFLOW3R/MPLSOUND/ELIXER is just the latest in a long, illustrious string. The three-disc package builds on the variety evident throughout Prince's career, mixing up rock, funk, R&B, silky-smooth balladry, and left-field genre influences. The third disc, ELIXER, is devoted to Prince's protégé, Bria Valente, who performs Prince-penned songs in the light, female R&B tradition of Prince-sponsored acts like Vanity 6.
But fans will be most interested in the first two discs, which feature the man himself performing new material. LOTUSFLOW3R takes a page from psychedelic rock, and it's a pleasure to hear Prince bring his guitar to the fore and let his Hendrix-influenced playing loom ...

| | Sam Cooke Portrait Of A Legend: 1951-64 CD (2003)
Balance CD music
$14.39 Contains an untitled hidden track which follows "Jesus Gave Me Water."
Sam Cooke was a giant not just in the soul world, but in the larger scheme of American music. His melding of soul, gospel, and pop was as trenchant as it was revolutionary and influential. This unbeatable 30-song compilation touches on every aspect of this phenomenally gifted singer-songwriter's career. The romantic croon of "You Send Me" shares space with the mournful "Sad Mood," the romping "Twistin' the Night Away," and the moving social/spiritual statement "A Change Is Gonna Come" (this compilation is one of the rare collections to have this stirring and sought-after track). For pure fun, it's hard to beat the humor-filled "Another Saturday Night." Perhaps the master stroke, though, is "Havin' a Party." As no less esteemed a personage than Bruce Springsteen once observed, it's an ostensibly celebratory song that seems to bear a deep sadness via Cooke's vocal performance, a sense of laughing to keep from crying. At the same time, Cooke manages the considerable feat of making loneliness sound like fun. It takes some kind of singer to pull off a trick like that. And it takes some kind of production team (take a bow, Teri Landi and Jody Klein) to bring such vibrant new life to the legendary material so lovingly remastered and repackaged for this top-shelf compilation.
The greatest single disc Sam Cooke collection ever, 30 tracks from gospel through his greatest hits ...

Stereolab's first full-length recording without guitarist/vocalist Mary Hansen, who died in a tragic accident in December of 2002, MARGERINE ECLIPSE finds the band soldiering on in admirable fashion. Essentially picking up where they left off on 2001's SOUND-DUST, the group continues to employ their trademark blend of vintage keyboards, airy French/English vocals, and frothy lounge-meets-electronica pop sensibilities. That's not to say that there absolutely no new developments; ...
