"The Seventh Seal" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
What happens when rowdy rockers get older? Hopefully, if they're like Eddie, Sammy and the boys, they can achieve a BALANCE between the fire from their youth and the more serious demands of maturing rock stars.
The struggle for BALANCE is apparent in songs about strained relationships, drugs and greed. The topics of Sammy's lyrics range from personal turmoil ("I need a change, I need it quick before it makes me sick...I don't like what I've been told I'm feelin'") to apocalyptic doom ("Broken now I can't help but feel someone cracked the seventh seal"). However, the band still kicks when Sammy shouts about the virtues of drugs and avarice in "Amsterdam" and "Big Fat Money."
Supporting this are Eddie's familiar warm tones and Alex's big-footed stomp. Tune into "Amsterdam" to hear Eddie's goofy, bearded grin, and that good-feelin' Van Halen rock. Yet although they offer three instrumental tracks, they no longer flaunt unbridled talent just because it's there. Instead of using songs as mere vehicles for instrumental pyrotechnics, the Van Halen virtuosity has been balanced out to serve the song, and it's a fine BALANCE.

Rolling Stone (3/23/95, p.122) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...BALANCE is pro forma pomp rock--but with VH in top form, power aplenty remains in their slick machine....Gleefully, [Sammy Hagar] surfs Eddie's guitar waves, apparently getting as much kick as any fan does when they crash and tumble the studio walls--and that's a kick indeed..." Very good cd. Overall, I really liked this album. Maybe not their best, but CERTAINLY not their worst. Unlike most others, I do like 'Big Fat Money' though. One of my favorites, in fact, on the album. Submitted by Sethro Tull (UTAH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Ok... This album is probably their worst since Fair Warning. It features powerful good rock songs, but sappy ballads and the awful Big Fat Money was a disappointment to all VH fans, making this the cd not ta get. The album is very addictive at first, but you lose interest. And why did eddie cut his hair? Perfect example of bad change Submitted by Zach (Lockport IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Balance album
$8.59 While it's tough to follow up a classic, VAN HALEN II comes close to matching the brilliance of the band's debut. Once again, the record begins with a fat bass line from Michael Anthony, and his piercing background vocals are featured on "You're No Good," an explosive cover of the Linda Ronstadt tune.
While the group's early material was slightly too heavy for Top ...

Balance album
$18.39 ANGELS FALL FIRST is the 1997 debut of female-fronted goth-metal act Nightwish.
When then tiny independent record label Spinefarm decided to take a chance on a brand new group called Nightwish by releasing a modest 500-unit pressing of their first album, Angels Fall First (originally recorded as a simple demo), little did they know this would quickly evolve into their biggest future cash cow, and one of Finland's most successful bands ever! Believe it: such were the humble origins and expectations for both band and album; despite the already quite advanced songwriting abilities of chief architect, keyboardist, and vocalist Tuomas Holopainen, which adorned melodic power metal with gothic, folk, and classical music elements, then topped them with the budding vocal power of a still baby-faced opera student named Tarja Turunen. Completed by guitarist/bassist Emppu Vuorinen and drummer Jukka Nevalainen, the nascent Nightwish were in fact merely scratching the surface of their commercial potential (and ensuing stardom), ...
