Digitally remastered by Chris Bellman (Bernie Grundman Studios, Los Angeles, California).
Almost evenly split between tracks that feature glammy showman David Lee Roth and those that feature earthy screecher Sammy Hagar, BEST OF VOLUME I seems designed to let this pioneering hard-rock band's fans compare and contrast between its two frontmen. As if to drive the exercise home, BEST OF features three tunes cut in '96--two of them with Roth, who had been estranged from the band since 1985, and one with Hagar ("Humans Being," originally released on the soundtrack to TWISTER).
Otherwise, BEST OF presents the hits in chronological order, beginning with the unadorned, aggressive sound of the early Roth material. Powered by guitarist Eddie Van Halen's hammer-on notes and orchestral pyrotechnics, and lightened up by Roth's used-car-salesman-on-a-bender persona, "Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love" and "Runnin' With The Devil" are as close to pure, perfect hard rock as anyone is ever likely to come. The early '80s found the band incorporating synthesizers (played by Eddie) and a pop sensibility, resulting in megahits like "Jump."
Things changed again when Hagar replaced Roth and took the band further from its roots, toward an expansive new sound with broader new arrangements, heard here in such pop hits as "Dreams" and "Right Now." Refusing to tip the balance toward either David Lee diehards or Sammy-come-latelys, BEST OF contains enough Van Halen milestones to keep anyone satisfied.

Missing the hits "Hot for teacher", "Best Of Both Worlds", "You Really Got Me", "Finish What Ya Started", "Black Anmd Blue" plus a few more. it does have a lot of great songs though. Humans Being is the worst dam song ever.

What is this?!
Good compilation for beginners, but where are the hits? youve got JUMP & RUNNIN WITH THE DEVIL, but where's BEST OF BOTH WORLDS & RUNAROUND? Sure they reunited with DLR, but they put too much emphasis on his era rather than the Hagar era. Disappointing.

It was 1972 in Pueblo, Colorado when a young lass named Terri first picked up the $30 Silvertone acoustic guitar from Sears. She had watched her older brother Chuck strumming this piece of wood, and she was fascinated. Becoming bored with her 'girly' activities such as dance and acrobatic classes, she told her mother that she, too, wanted to try the guitar. It was love at first touch. Her parents enrolled her in guitar instruction classes at the age of eight, and thus began her journey into the world of music. Terri and Chuck's music instructor told their parents that these two young siblings had a natural ability with the guitar. Subsequently, the two youths began playing at various guitar recitals in Pueblo and throughout Colorado. In 1976, when her family moved to Temple, Texas, Terri neglected to find a new music instructor; however, she never strayed away from the guitar. She knew she wanted to play rock n' roll, and after hearing Heart's 'Barracuda' and learning that there was a woman in the band who played guitar, Terri was convinced this was her calling. She and her brother put together their first rock n' roll band, Krystal Axe, in 1979, playing cover tunes by Rush, Queen, Ted Nugent, Kiss and the like. During her first two years of college at Texas State University, Terri's guitar took a bit of a back seat. The fun and freedom of dorm life detoured her from serious practicing. After her second year of pursuing a higher education, she decided against returning to a major university. Taking a few classes at Temple Junior College back home in Texas, she joined the school music group, Shadowfax. It was a Top 40 cover band that mostly played around town, but in March of 1985, the band would experience stardom. With the help of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation,* Shadowfax traveled to Romania and Austria. It was Terri's taste ...
