Guitarist Pat Metheny's exceptional compositional skills reached another plateau with the beautiful score for the film A MAP OF THE WORLD. Here, with a full orchestral accompaniment, Metheny explores the pastoral sound of the acoustic guitar and coaxes from it some of the most emotionally rich music he has ever composed. Those looking for the guitarist's signature modern Brazilian-flavored electric style will not find it here, nor are there any strains of Metheny's traditional jazz leanings as he fully develops a new side to his already plentiful musical gifts. Ranging from deeply moving solo lines with impressionistic shadings to sweeping pastoral jaunts that build to tremendous heights of grandeur, Metheny captures the spirit of the rural setting of the film, drawing on the sounds of his childhood. On its own, the music emphasizes the exceptional care with which Metheny undertakes his art, gently caressing the music from the instrument until it reaches its full potential.

Map of The World sdtk maps Metheny's musical soul. This is simply an excellent collection of instrumental music composed, arranged and, at times, performed by Pat Metheny. Choosing to show us a simple, accessible side of himself through these beautifully orchestrated short pieces, Pat offers some of his best work yet. His solo acoustic guitar is very expressive and effective in communicating the mood of these 28 cuts supporting the film and inspired by it. I particularly like cut 20, Resolution, with a short string passage reminiscent of the major-minor chord movement in PMG's "Phase Dance." Very worthwhile listening for fans or those who will become fans of Pat Metheny. Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas, TX - USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$14.79 Moshe (Mark) Weidenfeld was born on a cold, Thanksgiving morning, November 26, 1964 in Amityville, Long Island. Raised in the nearby hamlet of Massapequa along with such other notable American 'showbiz kids' as musicians Neil Diamond, the Stray Cats (a.k.a. Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom), the Cars' lead guitarist, Elliot Easton, comedian Jerry Seinfeld and actors such as the Baldwin Brothers (as in Alec and William.) Growing up in a musical family blended well with life in Massapequa as a lot of young people were into music and formed 'garage bands'. At home, on any given evening one could hear the sounds of Moshe's mother a.k.a. Lady Barbara playing one of her post-modern piano compositions, singing a spontaneous version of a song from her diverse repertoire or joining 'papa' Jerome in an Italian folk song on guitar he was strumming when he was not stompin' out a popular tune on the harmonica or plucking a Russian melody on the mandolin. There were also occasional sightings/soundings from Moshe's oldest brother Robert when he wasn't traveling the world or hitch-hiking across the U.S. Until he was about 10 years old, Moshe actually believed that brother 'Robbie' was Bob Dylan due to certain similarities in dress, facial hair, ethnicity, ...
