It is hard to effectively document in one collection the career of an artist who is as much a vital part of popular music history today as when he reluctantly ventured into a solo career in 1970. CLAPTON CHRONICLES offers an interesting mix of Slowhand's soundtrack-ready acoustic ballads from the '90s and his electric guitar-driven pop-blues from the '80s.
"My Father's Eyes" is an emotionally uplifting song about a man's search for his identity through his relationship with his father. "Tears in Heaven," the bittersweet eulogy to Clapton's son, may be his most timeless composition and performance. His groundbreaking "MTV Unplugged" performance produced a new arrangement of his plea to Patti Harrison, "Layla." This approach hinted at a new direction for Eric Clapton's music. Clapton's roots break through on the down-and-dirty Delta blues-tinged "Before You Accuse Me." He stands among very few who have carried their musical heart with them throughout their career and have stayed true to it.

Q (12/99, p.156) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...There are 2 new songs here...to entice the completists....with big-shot Babyface, [Clapton] gracefully updates his trademark sound. And if playing the blues is about expressing pain, then 'Tears In Heaven'...is the genuine article." Mojo (Publisher) (11/99, p.120) - "...the time of craftsmanlike albums and Albert Hall residencies, of quietly expensive suits and unassuming legendhood.....stuff to admire and even enjoy....a slow, measured transition from rage to resignation." $15.19 OLD EMPTY HALL REVIEWSJim,Your CD is exquisite. I enjoyed it so well..... I was driving while I listened to almost the whole thing, when I "came to" I didn't even know where I was.I had driven 3 miles the wrong way down RT 31.It is so well done....... BRAVO!Elaine Verstraete Birds-on-a-Wire---------------------Jim -  I just finished my first listen-thru. This is super. You and Mark are 2 talented guys - perfect combination of imagination in storytelling-songwriting and in technical achievement. You know I don't always love singer-songwriters, but your talents remind me of John Stewart, with the ability to describe and tell the story and get that emotional whomp in there. This is just a wonderful CD. Congratulations to you and Mark.  Slán, Cathy McGrath Cuisle Mo Chroi------------------------------"Like everyone, I usually pop in a new CD and do a quick preview of each song before I go back to listen in full. Some players even have that built in, right? Well, don't think you can do that with Empty Hall...every song is so good you'll be captivated by each song and listen to them from start to finish - no skipping!! So leave yourself enough time to be captivated."Art Krause------------------------I find this an altogether wonderful musical reflection on Americana past and present. When I first listened to the CD I found myself pushing the "repeat" button on several of the tracks, something I don't usually do... This album crept into the nooks and crannies in the attic between my ears. And it brushed away cobwebs I might have expected to find in an Old Empty Hall.
