Lyle Mays, who came to fame for his electric collaborations with Pat Metheny, surprised many with this superior outing in an acoustic trio setting. On the liner jacket Mays thanks Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, and Paul Bley for their inspiration. If one adds in Chick Corea and especially Bill Evans, that should give listeners an idea of what to expect. However, to his credit (and with the assistance of bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Jack Dejohnette) Mays avoids performing overly played standards and sticks mostly to originals (including two free improvisations). There is no coasting on this excellent set. ~ Scott Yanow

| Fictionary Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Relaxing Perfect CD for those who love piano jazz and want to relax and listen.
For me Lyle is a surprise here because he just don´t get this space to perform on Pat Matheny´s records. The way he plays is just great. On drums is Jack de Johnette and on bass Marc Johnson. A real great cd with lot´s of good music. Submitted by claesrunbalk (Gothenburgh, Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fictionary not the best of Mays. "Fictionary" by Lyle Mays was an unsatifying experience for me. Mainly because I am not a big fan of the jazz trio, particularly when the music is as progressive and as dark this offering. Away from the PMG, Lyle Mays, for me, is at his best on the first four cuts from "Street Dreams". There his talents shine as a composer, arranger and performer of more traditional swing and latin styles, along with layered solo work in musical material that is happier and more accessible. This is my favorite album of all time (so far) I never tire of Lyle Mays' playing and compositions. He's much more consistent than PMG which makes this better listening to concentrate on or have on as thinking music while reading or writing. I must say that his music is very private, less useful as music for social occassions. Submitted by Susan (Redmond, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Fictionary CD music
$7.59 This album is nothing short of a complete celebration of the electric guitar. Danny Gatton (1945-1994) was part fierce monster and part teddy bear. His playing style suggests bits of Dick Dale, bits of Chet Atkins, and traces of everything in between. ...
| | Miles Davis In Concert: Live At Philharmonic Hall CDs (1972) Limited Edition
Fictionary music CDs
$16.19 Recorded live at Philharmonic Hall, New York, New York on September 29, 1972. Originally released on Columbia (32092). Includes liner notes by Bobby Previte.
Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
By the time Miles Davis took it to the Philharmonic Hall stage to record IN CONCERT, his electric experimentation was boiling down to a singular Everest-sized epiphany: it's all about the groove! Such exotic touches as tabla and electric sitar help define the global aesthetic he sought.
IN CONCERT cruises at an unwavering, break-neck pace. Cedric Lawson's keyboards and Reggie Lucas' guitar set up swirls of textural color, setting the stage for Miles, who squeezes more electronic ...
| | Number One Hits Of The 80's, Vol. 3 CD (1988)
Fictionary songs
$4.85 The true test of a successful country song isn't necessarily its chart position, but its lasting impact of the artist's career and its durability on mainstream country radio. While Number One Hits of the 80s Vol.3 lives up to its name by providing 10 number one songs from MCA artist's, the tracks aren't exactly memorable. Still those looking for 80s country ...
| | Phillip Manuel Love Happened To Me CD (2000)
Fictionary album
$14.59 The smooth and elegant style of jazz vocalist Phillip Manuel lights up this 2001 release. The New Orleans singer teams up with a stellar cast of musicians from the Crescent City to put on the ritz with jazz standards from the likes of Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. Several tunes, including the title cut, are written by Manuel himself, along with pianist Michael Pellera. The musical artists backing Manuel up on the CD are some of the best New Orleans has to offer. They include Ellis Marsalis on piano, Roland Guerin and Bill Huntington on bass, and Fred Sanders on organ. Together, they swing on pieces such as "Summertime," "Just Squeeze Me," and "'Round Midnight." The silky and sophisticated voice of Phillip Manuel lends itself to work like this, creating a romantic ambience. The title track, as well as "These Foolish ...
| | George Sone Perform The Music Of Stewart Dirk Fischer CD (2004)
Fictionary CD music
$14.99 While it has been the rage for some time for every twenty-something musician who gets a record date to concentrate on original material, many of them would be wise to look for neglected compositions by veteran musicians like Stewart "Dirk" Fischer. Fischer, whose career has been devoted to jazz education rather than recording, is the brother of the well-known pianist Clare Fischer. He contributed ten originals and all of the arrangements for this big-band date led by trumpeter and flügelhornist George Stone (who also plays piano and vibes on the session). The players rise to challenge of Fischer's demanding charts, which feature a number of talented young musicians, along with seasoned artists such as Gary Foster. The swanky "Hamilton Allen Esquire" has a fine solo by guitarist Steve Gregory and a sizzling effort by tenor saxophonist Bill Liston. The well-named "Plucky" puts the spotlight on bassist Trey Henry, whose playing bring to mind the late Ray Brown. "Donde" is a very deliberate Latin jazz number, featuring Clare Fischer on acoustic piano. Fischer's sense of humor becomes obvious ...

| | Dr Von Zuko Jambodia CD (2005)
Fictionary songs
$9.35 The CD: Jambodia is the first work in the Jambodia Trilogy. Jambodia is best described as world fusion with multi-ethnic, neo-classical, and techno-electronic flavorings all pumped up with some serious funk and a whole lot of attitude! Jambodia carries a stimulating cadence throughout and is great for progressive or creative dance and aerobic exercise. It provides an energizing and up-lifting atmosphere that is stimulating but at the same time strangely calming. The flavors: Jambodia is heavily influenced by progressive and modern musical styles; Classical, Jazz, Trance, World-beat and even some good ole' Rock n' Roll. The blend of cultural rhythms produced with ancient instruments and modern electrified melodies are sometimes subtle but frequently obvious. This unexpected blend works and imbues a intoxicating flavor to the Jambodia brew. The Premise: The work is an energetic musical journey within the imaginary kingdom of Jambodia, a place where musical boundaries do not exist and the ancient and modern electronic rhythms blend and coexists to bring about an entirely new sound that is grounded in the distant past. The Artist: Dr. Von Zuko is a bit of an enigma even to those relatively few people who believe they know him quite well. Frequently characterized as reclusive, the strange doctor has been known to spend days-on-end locked away in his studio, "The Temple of Digital Dreams." In the sanctity of this mysterious (and ...
