1970's SEVEN, the mysteriously titled fifth Steppenwolf album overall, sees the group's return to the good-old heavy metal direction. 1969's MONSTER, an album that explored more serious social topics, proved to be an experimental side-step.

Steppenwolf gets back to basics on such Spinal Tap-esque titles as the funk rocker "Ball Crusher" and the instrumental "Earschplittenloudenboomer." With "Snowblind Friend," the band revisits the cautionary drug tale originally laid down in their '60s anthem "The Pusher." The most lyrically interesting track on the album is definitely "Renegade," in which Steppenwolf singer/leader John Kay tells the autobiographical tale of how he and his family fled Nazi Germany during World War II.

Photographer: Tom Gundelfinger.

Steppenwolf: Goldie McJohn (keyboards); George Biondo (bass guitar); Jerry Edmunton (drums, background vocals); John Kay, Larry Byrom.

Personnel: John Kay (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Larry Byrom (guitar, background vocals); George Biondo (background vocals).

Rolling Stone (12/2/70, p.54) - "...The tension which charecterized some of Steppenwolf's more popular material is missing..."

5 stars They Don't Get Any Better Than This!
First, to address two misconceptions in the blurb above, this was in fact the seventh release from Steppenwolf counting "Early Steppenwolf" and "Steppenwolf Live." Second, John Kay and his family did not escape from Nazi Germany... it was from Communist East Germany. Check your dates against his age. The Seven album in the band's own estimation (along with Monster) is the best work they ever did. Songs are top drawer from front to back, the playing is superb, and the production makes this recording sound contemporary. These guys ALWAYS had the goods. If you're going to own just one Steppenwolf CD, this should be it.

3 stars Mislead by New Release Date
When this was reissued this year I ordered because I thought it was a new, remastered version. Unfortunately it was just the same version from many years ago at a lower price. Music still good but don't buy if you think it is a remastered version.

3 stars Its not what you think!
Bought this from CD Universe when 2006 version was announced thinking it was a newly remastered version of the original CD. It's not, just a lower price version of the original CD. If you already have a copy, don't buy this one. Still great music. Hopefully a remastered version is on the way someday....

5 stars Fantastic !!!
A real rock classic! I've seen John Kay and Steppenwolf recently, and they still have their own special sound. After all these years, Steppenwolf remains the best sound ever.

5 stars Rock at it's finest!
Forget the 'Rolling Stone' blurb above.... they were full of it! This is one of the finest rock albums ever released, right up there with The Who "Who's Next" and "Sticky Fingers" by the Stones. Steppenwolf have never been properly credited as one of the best rock bands of all time .........if you don't believe it, play this one a few times! 'Ball Crusher' and 'Hippo Stomp' are as good as classic rock ever got!! Not a weak cut on the album!
