Raised in the projects of Chicago's South Side, the young R. Kelly displayed an uncanny natural aptitude for the piano, and cut his teeth as a performer by playing a portable electric keyboard and singing with his homies out on the mean streets of the Windy City. The sounds of gospel music and the great romantic balladeers suffuse R. Kelly's work, and on 12 PLAY, his libidinous follow-up to BORN INTO THE 90'S, this gifted singer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist draws upon all his formative experiences to create a sensual, evolutionary style of contemporary R&B.
Evolutionary in that Kelly's a classic heart-throb (with virtuoso chops the likes of Freddie Jackson and Luther Vandross) who walks that historical line between the sacred and secular streams of black music. R. Kelly proves that he's as prolific as he is talented on the two-disc set R., which not only culls together his most noteworthy and successful work, but is bursting with new tracks as well. Filled from start to finish with Kelly's unique blend of smooth vocal stylings and no-nonsense lyrical stance, this album also features the work of a few of his prominent friends--the opener, "Home Alone" sports a guest rap courtesy of Keith Murray, while "Money Makes The World Go Round" is graced by Nas.
A more mainstream pairing is witnessed in the dramatic show stopper "I'm your Angel," which finds Kelly alongside superstar Celine Dion, but the collaboration which really makes its mark is "We Ride," which features Cam'Ron, Noreaga, Jay-Z and Vegas Cats in a veritable who's who of Hip Hop's brightest stars. On Jodeci's first two albums, the love songs reigned and there was only a glimpse of their "new jack swing." THE SHOW THE AFTER-PARTY THE HOTEL brings out the funkier side of Jodeci, and properly balances the two.
Jodeci's music is equally rooted in gospel, R&B and hip-hop forms, and, when JoJo, Mr. Dalvin, DeVante and K-Ci sing, each can be heard distinctly. Like most of the album's songs, "Can We Flo" blends an R&B groove and powerful vocals, but succeeds primarily beacuse of the singers' gorgeous harmonies. As background singers for Father MC, Jodeci became skilled in singing over hip-hop beats and they played a major role in the formation of R&B hip-hop. "Fun 2 Nite" epitomizes the genre, and even adapts a brief part of the chorus from Kool & The Gang's "Celebrate." And, as always, Jodeci ably express the sensual portions of their sound ("Freek 'N You").
