Gary Allan's debut, Used Heart for Sale, is a competent set of neo-traditionalist country that occasionally comes to life -- such as on the single "Her Man" -- but often is hampered by unimaginative material and timid performances. Allan's best moments suggest that he is capable of more, yet Used Heart for Sale doesn't give him enough opportunity to stretch out and showcase his talents. ~ Thom Owens

Gary Allan is a surfer from Southern California, but you'd never know it from listening to IT WOULD BE YOU. Allan's taken care to pack his sophomore release with nothing but straight-up country songs from some of the finest writers in Nashville. Heck, he's even cut a song Conway Twitty wrote back in 1963 ("She Loves Me, She Don't Love You.") The material ranges from uptempo honky tonkers ("I've Got A Quarter In My Pocket," "Don't Leave Her Lonely Too Long") to melodic ballads ( "I Ain't Runnin' Yet," "I'll Take Today.")
Allan, with his slightly gritty voice, handles the range of material just fine. But his best performance, ironically, is on the CD's hidden track. "No Judgment Day" ...

On his first couple of albums for Decca, Gary Allan's talent was somewhat submerged in assembly-line Nashville production. After a label change, his third disc, 1999's SMOKE RINGS IN THE DARK found him fulfilling his potential with a rootsy, accessible New Traditionalist sound. A few years down the line, he continues to progress, bucking the Nashville Nazis along the way.

Among the current crop of honky-tonk singers, Kevin Sharp is the only one with a shaved head and chin whiskers. His debut album combines New Country with pop and rock, and quickly earned him a country hit with the title cut. Musically, Sharp attempts to set himself apart from the Nashville pack just as sharply as he does with his visage. On "Measure Of A Man," "Population 4000 Minus 1" and the rocking "Love Bomb," his emotive vocal style rings with the echoes of the heartland.
