Conceived by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice while the British duo were still in their early 20s, the rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was released in 1970 as a studio album before its many subsequent stage productions. Featuring Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas, this recording presents the initial versions of these well-known Broadway tunes, including the funky, frenetic "What's the Buzz?/Strange Thing Mystifying" and "The Temple," a hauntingly chaotic number. Although other productions of the musical are highly regarded, this original version is arguably the best.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

4 stars Original of musical and still the best version
This is a great version of the JC Superstar musical and still the best one I like. The vocalists are very strong and the music is what set the standard. This CD seems to eb remixed as the sound is very clear and balanced - more so that the original vinyl LPs. I love it.

AWESOME VINYL.CD!..GREAT MUSIC THAT FIT LYRICS PERFECTLY!..A STELLER LINEUP WITH IAN GILLAN AS THE DEFINITIVE "JESUS"..NO ONE HAS COME CLOSE TO THE AGONIZING PAIN AND SELF DOUBT JESUS FELT!GILLAN NAILS IT-WISHED HE WOULD.VE DONE MORE!!MURRAY HEAD CONTRIBUTION IS EXCELLENT..NO OTHER PRODUCTION COMES CLOSE TO THIS ONE!

5 stars Truly a classic!
This soundtrack has the best of everything. First, it pays proper respect to God and scripture. Secondly, the arrangements smoothly blend rock and opera together. Lastly, all of the singers perform their parts with powerful emotion and range. This production far exceeds "The Passion of the Christ" in capturing Jesus' last agonizing days on earth.
