When the Silver Apples were formed in the mid-60's, Simeon Coxe and Danny Taylor had no way of knowing that they were forging the prototype of experimental electronic music. Connecting over a dozen oscillators, Coxe created a homemade synthesizer which produced a world of futuristic bleeps, sweeps, distortions, and repetitious basslines. With the addition of Taylor's drums, they sounded like The Velvet Underground fronted by Nikola Tesla. In 1968 they released their eponymous album. Where their sound wasn't met simply with perplexity, it was met with perplexity and success--the single, "Oscillations," even cracked Philadelphia's top ten.
The success of SILVER APPLES allowed the band to use a 24 track studio to record their second album, CONTACT. CONTACT consists of the same mix of bass-line grooves, synthesized tweaking and quirky lyrics, but is better produced. Unfortunately, the back-cover photo of Danny and Simeon in a Pan-Am jet cockpit surrounded by marijuana paraphernalia prompted a lawsuit from the airline. To make matters worse, the band's manager confiscated their equipment in a financial dispute. They disbanded in 1970, leaving a legacy of two of the most innovative and influential albums ever created. Indeed, it's difficult to imagine today's electronica without them.
Cult album sought after by fans of Kraftwerk and early electronics.

Silver Apples/Contact Music Review
Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) New York, NY Gnutella is nice, but you won't find Silver Apples. The search engines sent me to CDU. What a joy to rediscover this band after all these years. How many parties did I bring to a crashing halt in the 60's by putting on Silver Apples? Only the hippest could survive it, with Simeon vamping away on wild chords from his home made electronica, and Taylor's intricate, precise drumming ticking away. "Oscillations" and "Seagreen Serenades" are some of my favorite cuts. "Lovefingers" is the hit of the LP for me; cool beat, nice 9th chords implied, great electronic textures, different vocals, poetic lyrics. From whence could such a band have sprung? Only the 60's. Contact, the second LP in the set, is also great to hear again, with "Fantasies" and "A Pox on You" being classic Silver Apples tunes. Buy it now! Early synth experiments... This is another of those trail-blazing efforts that you should probably hear at least once, just to listen to how to the early synths were being used in rock music. I think the music is pretty much all synth and drums, which might sound monotonous but it's not. I didn't much care for the CD on first listen but on repeat listens, it wears on you. This music isn't going to be for everyone and definitely won't appeal to the lowest common denominator but if you're into early Tangerine Dream or Faust, you should give it a listen. Silver Apples - 'Silver Apples/Contact' (MCA) This eighteen track disc is actually a compilation of the duo's first two records reissued on CD.Their self-titled debut ('68) and 'Contact' ('69).I believe this is the band that was a strong influence on artists like Meat Beat Manifesto,Spacemen 3,The Cars and Stereolab.Silver Apples members Simeon - audio generator and vocals as well as Dan Taylor - percussion and vocals had the chance to reunite awhile back.Top of the line electronic wizardry with nothing whatsoever held back.Recommended. Native American Electricity!!! For the Psychedelic era these albumes were very interesting. Early attempts to use a synth as a main instrument for musical expression. Coupled with rhythmic drumming and english lyrics that echo native american chants, this album is nothing short of an electric powwow. If you have gone to any Pow Wows you can and will appreciate this group. So, buy the CD already. First two albums on 1 CD. How can you miss???
