It's ironic that the 30-year anniversary of this classic album coincides with the runaway success of the O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU soundtrack, one of the best-selling movie soundtracks in history. Both albums find contemporary folk-rock musicians reaching back to the sounds of bluegrass, country, and folk (often lumped together under the heading "old-timey music"). The difference is that when the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did it in 1972 it was a new (even risky) idea.
Harry Smith's 1952 ANTHOLOGY OF FOLK MUSIC had inspired rock-generation kids like those who would form the Dirt Band to seek out traditional American music. The NGDB went a step further with this triple album by getting the old-timey artists themselves to collaborate on a tribute to the traditional American musical tapestry. Thus, we have Doc Watson singing "Tennessee Stud," Roy Acuff taking on the Hank Williams spiritual "I Saw the Light," and Earl Scruggs picking the "Nashville Blues," with the Dirt Band and various country/bluegrass luminaries backing them up. The most amazing thing about WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN is that it all works so well and fits together so seamlessly. An undertaking like this could easily have been a train wreck; instead it's a triumph.

| | Moffatts Chapter One: A New Beginning CD
Will The Circle Be Unbroken Vol. 2 songs
$16.89 The German issue comes with seven tracks not on the U.S. edition.
The Canadian-born Moffatts -- older brother Scott (guitar) and triplets Bob (drums), Clint (bass) and Dave (keyboards) -- may bring American pop act Hanson to mind with their summery harmonies and bouncy-happy attitude. However, on their latest album, Chapter 1: A New Beginning, they're a little more guitar-oriented than the trio from Tulsa, OK: the Moffatts have shed their country-pop sound in favor of mid- to late-'90s pop-rock. The boys have obviously taken big cues from Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, with their anguished, "3 A.M."-sounding vocals, and they pull it off rather well. Believe it or not, the Moffatts are a laudable teen pop band -- they've been performing for most of their lives and it shows -- and they play their instruments instead of attempting choreographed dancing and hip thrusting. The album has its share of semi-glossy, gooey songs like "Girl of My Dreams," "Miss You Like Crazy" and "I'll Be There for You," but the melodic, crunchy "Misery" rocks hard for a band that was singing songs like "Itty Bitty Smile" and "Grandma" just four years ago. Chapter 1 shows a lot of promise, and the Moffatts give the term teen idol some credibility. ~ ...

Will The Circle Be Unbroken Vol. 2 CD music
$8.65 Shannon Moore is a songwriter who has done well in getting her work to the movies and television. She's recorded a previous album titled LTD that appeared on the tiny FMA label in 1999, but for all practical purposes, Evaporate is her true arrival. Issued by the newly launched Water Records' imprint 10 Spot, the album is a near stellar collection of original American rock and pop tunes written with grace, rough-hewn elegance and guts. Moore understands the nuances of the craft of songwriting and has been at it awhile. That Evaporate appears on the scene as an album by a fully developed artist isn't just a plus for her, it's a privilege ...
