"Physical" became such a monster hit -- not just a hit, but a pop-culture phenomenon that was impossible to escape -- that it became difficult to view its accompanying album as anything other than a conduit for the single. The thing was, Physical was a damn good record, in many ways one of Olivia Newton-John's very best. Picking up where Totally Hot and Xanadu left off, Physical skillfully balances catchy yet mellow dance cuts with immaculately crafted adult contemporary pop and ballads. The title track, of course, is the best example of the dance side, but "Landslide," "Make a Move on Me," and "Promise (Dolphin Song)" illustrate that Physical wasn't a one-hit record at all -- if anything, they hold up better than the big hit. There is some filler here -- none of her records were free from that curse -- but it's well-made filler and helps make Physical one of the most enjoyable albums of her career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

I love this album by Olivia. While I don't care for the huge hit "Physical", I like all the other cuts on this album.

5 stars Fantabulous!
I bought this album on vinyl in 1981. When I pulled it out recently to give it a listen, it impressed me so much that I bought the CD, which sounds about 5 times better. This album is good through and through: the songs show the level of confidence and versatility that Olivia's gorgeous vocal talents had reached at this time, and the arrangements are melodic and interesting. "Landslide" is a perfect opener, electric and sexy. "Falling" combines beautiful chord progressions with Olivia's sweetness to form something almost unbearably lovely. "Silvery Rain" switches back and forth between folk and rock, and Olivia handles both with ease. "Carried Away" has BEEGEES written all over it. And "The Promise" shows Olivia's interest in endangered animals, the environment and social concerns. I could go on and on, but the point is, the album is a classic, and Olivia was definitely THE star of the moment. The title song was the huge runaway hit, and "Make A Move On Me" went Top 5, but all of the cuts contribute to a nearly flawless album.

I love this cd! It has so many great songs on it, including the HUGE #1 hit "Physical", the top 5 hit "Make A Move On Me", and standouts like "The Promise (The Dolphin Song)"-which showcases Olivia's outstanding vocal abilities, the "Physical"-esque "Stranger's Touch", and "Carried Away".

This is a great CD we used to listen to in the late 70's and the 80's (on cassette). Love all the songs. A true classic.
