This was the debut album by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. LOST IN THE OZONE was released in 1971, after the band moved to San Francisco from Michigan. The group's mix of Western swing, country, rockabilly, and novelty songs was not typical of the Haight-Ashbury music scene. In retrospect, this album, with its earthy mix of assorted genres culled from the early days of rock & roll, seems to have been ahead of its time. They only other Bay Area band similar to them at the time was the New Riders of the Purple Sage, but that group had more of a country-inflected sound.
On LOST IN THE OZONE, this outfit rollicks in the best possible ways. They sometimes sound like they're on the verge of tipping over ("Wine Do Yer Stuff"), while other times come across as achingly earnest ("Daddy's Gonna Treat You Right"). "Hot Rod Lincoln" became a hit for Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen and helped put them on the map. This album and its three successors (recorded with the original lineup) are all examples of top-notch American roots music.Rolling Stone (12/9/71, p.58) - "..[this] album's been overdue...hits the nail right on the head..." Mojo (Publisher) (12/00, p.133) - "...The band kicks solidly on favorites...with fiddle to the fore in the best Willis tradition..." Country Rock-a-Billy Western Swing Blues You have to be mighty so-phis-ta-ma-kated to appreciate how ahead of their
time Commander Cody was in meshing rock,
country, twang, classic, blues, and every other kind of music into one huge
Saturday night let's rip-it-up-and-party, leave-nothing-behind attitude.
But even the most un-educa-macated amongst us feels it, in every song on this disc, from the saddest song you'll ever hear (Seeds and Stems) to the most rockin'(20 Flight Rock) to the absolute epitamy of boogie-woogie(Beat Me Daddy
Eight To The Bar).
There was (is) virtually no better live
band ever (no small claim) and this initial album more than hints at the
genius, and just plain fun, of Commander Cody...

Could have been better I like Commander Cody, and this album had all the good songs on it but I didn't like the way it was arranged. I like most of his other albums better Submitted by a reviewer (Knox TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Lost In The Ozone
$9.19 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, ...
