By virtue of containing "Funk #49," if for no other reason, RIDES AGAIN, the second album from Cleveland rockers the James Gang, was one of the templates for '70s American blues/boogie rock. While there's no denying that cuts like the aforementioned ... Full Descriptioniconic riff monster and the driving "Woman" are full of long-haired, shirtless, amps-on-11 abandon, there are a number of acoustic-based moments on the album as well, making it plain that neither singer/guitarist Joe Walsh, nor the rest of the James Gang, were one-trick ponies. The folky fingerpicking of "Ashes, the Rain and I" and the easygoing strum of "There I Go Again" provide a nice contrast to the band's harder-edged tunes.
Additional personnel includes: Rusty Young (pedal steel guitar).
The James Gang: Joe Walsh (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Dale Peters (guitar, bass); Jim Fox (drums, percussion).

Q (3/92, p.88) - 3 Stars - Good - "...effective guitar arrangements that mixed country swing, strummed acoustic, chunky electric and some fluid soloing..." Hide Description James Gang Rides Again Songs Rides Again Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Joe Walsh fans will love this! It's great to know and to hear that this CD is true from it's original vinyl pressing, that is it contains "Bolero" in the medley of "The Bomber". In the early years of Album Oriented Rock radio here in San Antonio, I heard many a selection from this album and knew it would be part of my brothers and my record collection. Joe Walsh's guitar tone, electric and acoustic is classic, and very nice Hammond organ work on "Tend My Garden"..Rusty Young of Poco adds some fabulous pedal steel guitar. From gut wrenching rock'n'roll to the classically inspired "Ashes The Rain And I", if you owned the vinyl you need to get this CD! At first I was going to give this one 4 stars but what the heck..5 bright ones, y'all. Submitted by rreyes36 (San Antonio, TX.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Simply Incredible - A Classic - Legendary There are not very many "remastered" albums I know of that can LITERALLY TRANSPORT you back in time to the days and the places where you first heard the original music. Trust me - "Rides Again" will beam you back instantly to your days of youth. The remastering is flawless and even more importantly it is COMPLETE in that this version picks up the nuances such as "BOLERO" that may have escaped other attempts on other versions of James Gang compilations. Us "more mature" listeners will relish the time travel. Younger listeners will find a new genre in Joe and the Gang as they listen to this group who were WAY ahead of their time...and VERY welcome back here in the future. PS...I saw them LIVE last week in a "Rides Again" tour in the Dallas area - as Joe Walsh would say "my geese are still bumping". Simply Incredible. Rides Again CD music
$6.39 Walsh is flanked here by Kenny Pasarelli on bass and Joe Vitale on drums, keyboards, and flute. Production help from Bill Szymczyk helps give the record its signature sound--simultaneously chunky and slick--and brings the effects-heavy sound of Walsh's guitar to the fore. But this is ultimately Walsh's show: he knows how to rock, lilt, and craft a pop hook, all the while maintaining levity with his off-hand vocal delivery and playful lyrics. SMOKER YOU DRINK, PLAYER YOU GET is a solid slice of FM rock fare, and is still one of the standouts in Walsh's solo discography.
"Rocky Mountain Way," the tune that opens Joe Walsh's sophomore release (and remains one of his best-known songs), is a textbook example of Walsh's strengths. The song is driven by a slinky hard rock groove that boasts crunchy, distorted ...

Rides Again music CDs
$6.39 Cleveland hard-rockers The James Gang were soon to kiss their golden age goodbye when their third album (helpfully titled THIRDS) was released; it would be their final studio recording with singer/guitarist Joe Walsh. From the soul/gospel inflections of "White Man/Black Man" to the string arrangements of "Again," and the country rock of "Dreamin' in the Country," THIRDS was the band's most diverse outing to date, but the centerpiece was the rocker "Walk Away," which remains one of the band's best-known tunes. Walsh would soon walk away himself, ...

$34.15 Big, expansive Euro-pop, Australian style. Stylistically, this duo is coming straight out of the '80s with a vengeance. Savage Garden look to Duran Duran and Big Country for influences. Guitars are used for texture, not as instruments of angst or anger. But the Prince-style strings and piano at the end of "To the Moon and Back" show a willingness to experiment within the somewhat narrow confines of their chosen sound.

San Franciscan Huey Lewis and his band exploded onto the 1980s music scene with a radio-friendly brand of proletarian pop that followed the basic structural formula of '50s and '60s rock and roll and overlaid it with '80s tech trappings (synths, multitracked, processed instruments and vocals) for maximum accessibility. In the process, they endeared themselves to the American heartland to the tune of a dozen top-10 hits and album sales of over 12 million. TIME FLIES combines those hits with some key album tracks to present a comprehensive portrait of the band.
The album opener, "The Heart Of Rock & Roll," serves as the band's manifesto, with a message that boils down to "Rock & Roll Is Here To Stay" over a chugging 4/4 rhythm. "Workin' For A Living" (along with the inexplicably omitted "Hip To Be Square") cemented Lewis' reputation as the man who made living in the middle of the road seem fun. For all of Lewis' traditionalism, the catchy horn lines and synth bass of "I Want A New Drug" place that track squarely in the mid-'80s. If you thought old-time rock and roll was long gone, you probably haven't heard the News.
Though Huey Lewis's musical origins are in the British pub rock scene of the early '70s, he made his name on a string of hugely successful, slick pop-rock tracks released during the 1980s. Backed by his trusty bar band the News (something of a poor man's E Street Band), Huey Lewis was a seemingly unstoppable force during the Reagan years, and TIME FLIES collects the key tracks that marked his incredible run. "The Heart of Rock & Roll," "Do You Believe in Love," "If This is It," and "I Want a New Drug," among many others, display a keen pop acumen, as they incorporate everything from doo wop to new wave to stadium rock into an easily digestible, radio-friendly framework. While some might accuse Huey Lewis & the News of playing it way too safe, they were certainly never about danger in the first place. TIME FLIES' 16 tracks perfectly embody the News' m.o. This is crisp pop music, with a tailgate-party vibe and smile on its face.
