Waylon perfectly articulates a unique romantic dilemma in "I Can't Help the Way I Don't Feel About You," emphasizing the irony of the situation. He manages a poignant take on cult hero Jesse Winchester's "Defying Gravity." Perhaps most impressive, though, is the unguarded melancholy so eloquently expressed in the quietly heartbreaking "Crying Don't Even Come Close." HANGIN' TOUGH isn't a definitive Waylon album, but it will reveal it's share of diamonds in the rough to hardcore fans.
Jennings made his name by flouting Nashville convention in a memorably willful way. Consequently, it's hard to fault him for venturing into seemingly inappropriate musical areas. He's covered everything from "Sweet Caroline" to "MacArthur Park" and gotten away with it on sheer chutzpah. So when this 1987 offering leads off with a very uncountry version of the Gerry Rafferty hit "Baker Street" and finds its way to the dated '70s tune "Chevy Van," you have to allow the man his moods. More importantly, HANGIN' TOUGH features Jennings' stout, unflappable vocal style and some interesting digressions from the usual country format.

Retreating to generally quieter territory after the somewhat splashy IT'S NOT BIG IT'S LARGE, Lyle Lovett also backs away from original tunes on NATURAL FORCES, choosing to devote the bulk of the 11-track album to other writers. Contemporary country duo Bomshel issue FIGHT LIKE A GIRL, their 2009 debut album, three years after Curb licensed EP BOMSHEL STOMP on their own label. The duo of Kristy Osmunson and Kelley Shepard created a buzz on country radio earlier in the year with the single "Fight Like a Girl," written by the pair with Bob Regen, which has become an anthem--especially for young women--of empowerment. That track is obviously here, as are the barroom dancehall stomper "Karma Is a Female Dog" and anthemic "19 and Crazy." The truth: the pair is talented beyond belief almost. They can write and sing and have the looks that breed success in an industry that values such qualities highly. Their songs were all co-written with Nash Vegas professionals and the production is pure '80s hair rock with Shepard's fiddle added in all the right spots.
