Waylon perfectly articulates a unique romantic dilemma in "I Can't Help the Way I Don't Feel About You," emphasizing the irony of the situation. He manages a poignant take on cult hero Jesse Winchester's "Defying Gravity." Perhaps most impressive, ... Full Descriptionthough, is the unguarded melancholy so eloquently expressed in the quietly heartbreaking "Crying Don't Even Come Close." HANGIN' TOUGH isn't a definitive Waylon album, but it will reveal it's share of diamonds in the rough to hardcore fans.
Jennings made his name by flouting Nashville convention in a memorably willful way. Consequently, it's hard to fault him for venturing into seemingly inappropriate musical areas. He's covered everything from "Sweet Caroline" to "MacArthur Park" and gotten away with it on sheer chutzpah. So when this 1987 offering leads off with a very uncountry version of the Gerry Rafferty hit "Baker Street" and finds its way to the dated '70s tune "Chevy Van," you have to allow the man his moods. More importantly, HANGIN' TOUGH features Jennings' stout, unflappable vocal style and some interesting digressions from the usual country format.
Personnel: Waylon Jennings (vocals, guitar); Billie Joe Waker, Jr., Larry Byrom, Reggie Young, Gary Scruggs, Richard Bennett (guitar); Ralph Mooney (steel guitar); Mark O'Connor (mandolin, mandola); John Jarvis (piano, synthesizer); Steve Schaffer (Synclavier); Jerry Bridges (bass); Matt Betton (drums): Curtis Young (background vocals).

Hangin' Tough album
$9.25 Digitally remastered by Elliott Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York).
THIS TIME is part of Buddha Records' Original Masters series.
Buddha Records is to be commended for resurrecting many of Waylon's finest, long out-of-print '70s albums, with extra tracks to boot. THIS TIME is marked by Jenning's classic mid-'70s "outlaw country" sound; bare-bones production and raw, rock-inflected musicianship. The title song is a forceful statement of intent, while "Louisiana Women" features a slinky, uncharacteristically understated vocal performance.
THIS TIME is the immediate successor to Jennings' genre-defining finest hour, HONKY TONK HEROES, an album full of Billy Joe Shaver songs, and Shaver's work pops up here as well. His bluesy, churning "Slow Rollin' Low" is a classic Shaver underdog anti-anthem. The bonus tracks are of historical interest, as they feature Waylon backed by Buddy Holly's Crickets, of which Jennings was a member before his solo career. They tackle Holly tunes in a country style, with unsurprisingly magical results. Thus, the reissue of THIS TIME offers an even more revealing portrait of Jennings' artistry at its peak than the original release does.

Hangin' Tough songs
$13.15 THE MORNING GLORY RAMBLERS is a jewel in the crown of the formidable discographies of Norman and Nancy Blake. Though the two have enjoyed an ongoing personal and professional relationship since the 1970s, their duo records are few and far between, which makes this outing all the more enjoyable. Norman participated in the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? soundtrack, and both Norman and Nancy performed in the attendant DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN tours. Not surprisingly, the revitalized interest in early-20th-century rural-American forms sparked by these activities informs this 2004 release.
From the daguerreotype-like photo of the couple on the cover to the choice versions of old-time classics within, THE MORNING GLORY RAMBLERS draws a line straight back to the beginning of the Americana tradition. Treatments of songs by Johnny Matthias (1836's "The Way Worn Traveler"), the Carter Family ("Sunny Side of Life"), ...

Hangin' Tough album
$11.49 Unabashedly retro, Austin-bred quartet the Derailers blend classic honky tonk with roots rock & roll in a way that's difficult to resist (and why would anyone want to?). RETROSPECTIVE: JUST ONE MORE TIME spans the band's output from 1995 through 2003, including mostly original material and a few oddball covers. While there is a certain contemporary sheen to the Derailers' sound--the band would be just as at home in a hipster bar in Brooklyn as they would in a Bakersfield ...
