| | Al Green Greatest Hits CD Al Green Discography of CDs
(5 Customer Reviews)
The expanded version of GREATEST HITS includes 5 bonus tracks and is newly remastered.
Sam Cooke's death in 1964 left a huge void in the world of soul music not filled until Al Green's breakthrough in the early '70s. Although many great male soul singers came and went in the years following Cooke's death, none came close to the smooth and creamy style that translated to consistent cross-over success. While Otis Redding was gritty and James Brown relentless, in Green's hands, R&B was sophisticated and suave. GREATEST HITS basks in a style of sultry soul that Green inherited from Cooke.
Yet, Green's style owed as much to producer Willie Mitchell's delicate production as it did to the singer's pure falsetto. While not inclined to use the vast numbers of musicians that Phil Spector did, Mitchell's use of James Mitchell (no relation) and Charles Chalmer's string arrangements, the Memphis Horns and the background vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers and Rhodes gave Green's songs a full sound that wrapped itself around Green's aching emotivity. "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" features all these elements at play, along with the crack cadence of former MG drummer Al Jackson and brothers Teenie and Charles Hodges, whose respective guitar and organ juice up the rhythm.
Thematically, listening to GREATEST HITS is like thumbing through a primer on the evolution of a relationship, and the ups and downs that come with it. The despair of "Tired Of Being Alone" gives way to a fleeting affair in "Call Me (Come Back Home)." The joy Green finds in "Love And Happiness" is temporary before the pleading begins anew with "Let's Stay Together," then gets tied up with a declaration ("L-O-V-E (Love)") and a proposal ("Let's Get Married").
Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee.

Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.112) - Ranked #52 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "The honey-voiced Green made some of the most visionary soul music of the Seventies..." Vibe (12/95-1/96, p.160) - "...These 15 body-soothing jams are pure butter....'Let's Stay Together'...is the foundation of the edifice that became his church of love. Green's voice testifies, prophesies, moans, grunts, and downright screams for love, the way some...shout for Jesus..." Al Green Greatest Hits Songs | 1. | Tired of Being Alone |

One of the great ones. This CD of course has to be one of the best R&B singers of all time. Smooth Sultry, Comforting, suave, everything love and soul should be. And of course lean on me is not by Al Green Submitted by a reviewer (Flagstaff, Arizona) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Royce Da 59 Street Hop CD (2009)
Greatest Hits
$11.24 In pre-release interviews, Royce da 5'9" laid out a perfect description of his style: a Detroit kid brought up on Nas whose head was sent spinning once Eminem came around. Three years in the making--twelve months in prison for a DUI being part of the problem--STREET HOP often has a solid foundation that's absolutely classic in feel but also features those quirky, sick-o rhymes that are distinctly post-Shady. "I mix a between Chris Brown and Chris Jericho/Where's your daughter?" is an unsettling bit from the freaky track "Street Hop 2010" which goes on to reference Marlon Brando's Apache friend picking up his Oscar right before rattling off some psycho-babble about "syphilis nun chucks" and other bizarre whatnot. Hard to believe the convincing R&B stunner "Thing for Your Girlfriend" could follow with all its radio-friendly polish while elsewhere "New Money" brings reminders of Roc-A-Fella's heyday with its bright and grand Streetrunner production. The minimal "Soldier" features an innovative Frequency beat with a bit of Rick Rubin-styled crunch which Royce takes in another direction, going the Kool Keith route and hurling insults like "Your mama got a glass eye/With a fish in ...

| | Betty Davis Nasty Gal CD (1975)
Greatest Hits
$12.59 Funk diva Betty Davis was supposed to break big upon the release of her third album, NASTY GAL. Davis and her well-seasoned road band, Funk House, entered the studio with total artistic control in the making of the album. This set contains classic and often raunchy street funk anthems such as the title track (with its infamous anthemic lyric: "...You said I love you every way but your way/And my way was too dirty for ya now...." ), "Talkin' Trash," "Dedicated to the Press," and the musically ancestral tribute "F.U.N.K." It also features the beautiful, moving, uncharacteristic ballad "You and I," co-written with her ex-husband, Miles Davis, and orchestrated by none other than Gil Evans. It's the only track like it on the record, but it's a stunner. The album is revered as much for its musical quality as its risqué lyrical content. This quartet distilled the Sly Stone funk-rock manifesto and propelled it with real force. Check the unbelievable twinning of guitar and bassline in "Feelins" that underscore, note for note, Davis' vocals. The drive is akin to hardcore punk rock, but so funky it brought Rick James himself to the altar to worship (as he later confessed in interviews). And in the instrumental break, the interplay between the rhythm section (bassist Larry Johnson and drummer Semmie "Nicky" Neal, Jr.) and guitarist Carlos Moralesis held ...
