THE MAN-MACHINE and its predecessor, 1977's TRANS-EUROPE EXPRESS, deserve their exalted position in the pantheon of modern music, if only for their importance in shaping the future development of hip-hop and dance music. The concept behind The Man-Machine took Kraftwerk's mechanistic vision of humanity to its logical extreme, but the music within captured the group at their most engagingly melodic. Instantly memorable, "The Model" reached number 1 in the UK singles chart three years later, and proved to be a direct inspiration for the wave of gloomy electronic bands that quickly followed. However, none of them ever came close to grasping the subtle human touch that lay behind Kraftwerk's faceless exterior.
Import pressing of their 1978 album that features the same 6 tracks as their out of print US version. EMI.

Alternative Press (5/02, p.104) - Included in AP's '10 Essential Pioneering Electronic Albums' - "...Their most chart-friendly LP...this album laid the foundation for the 2nd British Invasion of the early '80s..." Q (Magazine) (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "As evidenced by the mesmeric groove of 'Spacelab,' their influence on the more electronic end of disco was feeding back into their own art..."

At their peak This really did well in America and it can be seen why. Having introduced the US to the sound of electronic rhythms with 'Computer World', 'Man Machine' built further on that with its electro basslines and beats which were adopted by many, particularly in the Detroit area.
Of all Krfatwerk songs, 'The Model' is probably best known. It's on here and sounds as fresh as it did back then. But it's not the only song worth a mention. 'The Robots' is another classic Kraftwerk song with its electro rhythm combing well with its simple melodies.
A powerful album of electro pop from the originals.

The perfect blend of meat and metal If you want "robot pop," there's no better place to look than THE MAN-MACHINE. Kraftwerk almost single-handedly invented what we call techno on this record! Their minimalistic core and simplistic melodies are never boring and never cease to deliver the "Kraftwerk Feeling"...I especially like the title track, which reaches for absolute simplicity in music, and I would actually dare to call it perfect (thus the five stars). Of course, most will buy this CD just to hear the original version of the club favorite "The Robots," but there is much more to this record than the single...Spacelab is a beautiful delight, Metropolis is a chilling midnight vigilante, The Model actually deserves to be a hit single, and Neon Lights is a relaxing venture into the city at night -- yes, Ralf Huetter can actually sing!
Socially absent and yet infinitely influential, Kraftwerk the band produced one perfect album, and this is it. Submitted by protoman (Houston, TX) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Classic synthesizer masterpiece If you like to know what synth music was like before all that MIDI devices and digital samplers, get this disk. The sound is smooth, accurate, cold and very attractive. If you never heard this band before, the album will give you idea of what kind of mood present on the rest Kraftwerk albums, although they style is very different.
The disk contains four shapeforming tracks, which stuck into memory after the first listening: The Model, Neon Lights, Metropolis and Spacelab. Quite probably you heard them before, since they were often used on TV as a background music.
If you're romanticist, fond of Good Old Sci-Fi and/or live in a big city, this CD is for you.
