The three-disc TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT commemorates the series of all-star benefit performances. Disc 1 contains one song from every artist who performed at the June 7, 1997 concert at Randall's Island, New York, New York. Disc 2 does the same for the June 8, 1997 show at the same venue. The third disc is an Enhanced-CD, containing a full audio program recorded during the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco as well as multimedia computer files. Also included are footage from the show, interviews conducted by Sean Lennon, photos, soundbites and information on Milarepa, Adam Yauch's non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of compassion and non-violence. All proceeds and artist royalties from the CD will be donated to the organization.
Recorded live at Randalls Island, New York, New York on June 7 & 8, 1997 and Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California on June 15 & 16, 1996. Includes liner notes by Adam Yauch and The Dalai Lama.
Over two days in New York during the summer of 1997, The TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT put the message of human rights where it could do the most good--in the minds of today's youth culture. Containing one song by each of the pop stars who donated their time, TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT features live performances by a staggering collection of musical personalities. Sonic Youth and Pavement contribute edgy alt-rock tracks, while the hip-hop nation is represented by such luminaries as Biz Markee, KRS-1, and A Tribe Called Quest.
Pop deities Michael Stipe, Patti Smith, Alanis Morissette, and Bjork give standout performances, while Blur, Radiohead and Oasis's Noel Gallagher (playing solo on "Cast No Shadow") make up the Britpop contingent. Opening and closing the day's proceedings, the Tibetan Monks and nuns contribute prayers, whose haunting, plaintive sound serves to remind the listener of the concert's very serious, very urgent purpose. A third, enhanced CD contains tapes of an earlier TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT in San Francisco and features interviews, sound bites and other multimedia elements as well as tracks by Cibo Matto, Beck, and The Fugees.
