One of my top ten best albums of all time.
REM started out as an underground art/rock little band from Athens, Georgia only played on college radio in early eighties in a time when new wave ruled the airwaves there sound was unique and lyrics were socially concious. Document and Life's Rich Pageant are my all time two faves. This album is a must have if you like truly alternative they were alternative before there was alternative music.

accessible early-ish R.E.M.
So it's not really that early, and not "accessible" in the popular way Out of Time and Automatic for the People are, which are only "okay," in my opinion... but I fell in love with Document, Green and Eponymous all at the same time in younger days, and while I still like all of them, I more often get the urge to listen to Document. I *do* like Finest Worksong and I think it's a great way to open the album. Each song has a pretty catchy hook. Document is the album that made me want to check out even earlier albums, and R.E.M. has some really great ones. Especially if you like Green, I'd recommend giving this one a listen.

Average by REM standards
I can understand why this album became their first big hit album. That doesn't mean to say I really like it though. In fact I think it's their second worst album. Their worst being 'Out of Time'.
Even with an average REM album you get some cracking songs. The fans favourite 'It's the end of the world' always brings back happy memories. Other highlights include 'Finest Worksong' (which I do not like personally, but can see its quality), 'Exhuming McCarthy' and one of my favourite, if not my favourite, REM songs, the stunning, 'Welcome to the occupation'.
I really admire REM's political and social stance that they took with this album, it's just not that consistent musically. Some tracks are brilliant, while others are very, very ordinary.

Excellent
I had this cd when it first came out and Sold it many years back. I hadnt listened to REM of about 10years but the new album Accelerate had me getting into the back catalog. Finest Worksong is the highlight here, this Reissue has great sound quality. and the bonus tracks are nice.
