Though '80s nostalgia was an inevitability, the truth is that some of the most influential voices of that era never went away. The members of Duran Duran had their mortgages paid off long before GREATEST was conceived, so their sincerity in releasing a best of album is not to be doubted. One listen is enough to convince the most forgetful fan that every once in a while, the musical taste of teenage girls is right on the mark.
GREATEST follows the teen heartthrobs from their inspiring early days (the quintessential new wave anthem "Planet Earth," the stylish, more-than-suggestive "Girls On Film") straight through to their later work ("Electric Barbarella," a whirring, modern dance cut). In between, the classic "Hungry Like The Wolf" and the mournful "Save A Prayer" give evidence of the band's mastery of the pop form, while the Bond theme "View To A Kill" and "Notorious" trace their development during the decade with which they are inextricably linked.

The inextricable of duran duran I've enjoyed all kind music around the world and honestly if there was a possibility to calling the Duran Duran's music, certantly it would be "POETRY MOTION" Submitted by rev015 (Ibarra - Ecuador) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
GREATEST! A welcome return from Eighties Icons Duran, Duran. "Reach Up (for the Sunrise)" is a certified smash in Canada and on the Billboard Dance charts. Toronto's CHUM Radio has been heralding the band's triumphant return to North America as their first Toronto Stadium Concert in Decades approaches. (It's also a return of sorts by Lead Man Simon LeBon to the City that he once called home. He resided in Toronto's "High Park" during the height of their Eighties Fame). Another CD that fans of Duran Duran should check out is AMBER - My Kind of World. This CD nicely complements Duran Duran's latest. The first Single, the ALT Rock infused "You Move Me" has already hit #1 Stateside on XM Radio. And the Second Single "Voodoo" is being readied for an early 2005 Commercial release. Fans should also check out the Pat Benatar-esque "Just Like That" and the Whitney Houston Meets Pat Benatar Power Ballad "Sacrificial Lamb". Billboard Magazine in it's glowing review said that Amber deserves a spot in the Mainstream. My advice? Get BOTH Duran, Duran and AMBER - My Kind of World. "Cuts" In The Cuts Cut "GREATEST" To The Quick... An outstanding collection, containing many more hits then the one that preceded it. But also, like "Decade," what prevents "Greatest" from earning a full five stars is that insidious disease that afflicts most wanna-be great hits lineups: "songus interruptus." Nothing destroys a greatest hits compilation more than stingily edited versions of the tunes you most want to hear in full flower, like "Skin Trade."
A good addition to your collection if you don't already have "Decade" (I do,) but I'd hold out for a definitive boxed set that contains the FULL versions of EVERY song, even the ones you may not be so crazy about. Submitted by dcscribe (Arlington, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Greatest CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael CDs (1998)
Greatest album
$15.99 Though he made his initial mark on music history as half of the unctuous British duo Wham, George Michael wasted little time in proving himself more than just a pretty pop face. This comprehensive two-disc compilation documents the career of a man who was able to successfully meld pop, R&B and serious, introspective balladry without ever losing sight of the all-important groove ...
| | Phil Collins Hits CD (1998)
Greatest CD music
$15.49 East, Leland Sklar, Cornelius Mims, John Giblin, Freddie Washington (bass); Sheila E.(percussion); Peter Gabriel, Sting, Marva King (background vocals).
In the early '80s, Collins took a break from the helm of Genesis to inaugurate a solo career that abandoned his group's art-rock agenda for a mainstream pop approach. In the ensuing years, the king of Nice Guy Pop established himself as one of the world's premier top 40 balladeers, as evidenced by the wall-to-wall hits that make up the balance of this appropriately titled collection. HITS walks the listener through the smooth, well-produced Collins hits that have worked their way into the collective consciousness of radio listeners (even casual ones) over the years. There are majestic power ballads ("I Wish It Would Rain") to light-hearted, infectious pop-funk ("Sussudio") and moody atmospheric pieces ("In the Air Tonight") HITS represents the full range of material this prolific performer has turned out over the course of his wildly successful ...
| | Depeche Mode Singles 86>98 CDs (1998)
Greatest music CDs
$20.19 The mid-'80s saw Depeche Mode go through an intense musical development. Their fey, pretty-boy image of the early '80s turned into a portrait of intense, highly unique artists, reveling in the throes of obsession. The quirky pop tunes that had put them on the map turned into deep, introspective works, though they were catchy (and successful) nonetheless. In short, they matured from pop stars to artists. Guitars occasionally crept in, and their work of the period covered on the two disc set, THE SINGLES 1986-1998, bears an overall more serious tone than that which preceded it.
The band's proclivities are best represented in the relentless throb and psychosexual subject matter of the ubiquitous dance-floor classic "Personal Jesus," in which David Gahan's deadpan delivery and ...
| | Sultans Of Swing: The Very Best Of Dire Straits CD (1998)
Greatest songs
$11.19 Also includes material from Mark Knopfler's side project, The Notting Hillbillies.
Additional personnel includes: Sting, Jeff Porcaro, Joop de Korte.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
This solid collection is a compelling career overview of one of rock's most distinctive groups. Led by Mark Knopfler, whose deadpan vocal style and stunning guitar technique characterize the band's sound, Dire Straits burst on the scene in 1978 with "Sultans of Swing." This VERY BEST OF begins there (even amid the ensemble's later hits, the lead-off track's clean shuffle rhythm and minor-key melody still dazzles) and continues all the way to cuts from the group's 1991 release, ON EVERY STREET, and their 1993 live outing, ON THE NIGHT.
The Dylan-esque narrative of "Romeo and Juliet," from MAKING MOVIES, is one of the early highlights here. At the collection's heart are the tracks from the 1985 blockbuster BROTHERS IN ARMS, including the lamenting "So Far Away," bopping "Walk of Life," and the irrepressible "Money for Nothing." Beyond showcasing Knopfler's ...
| | U2 Best Of 1980-1990 CD (1998)
Greatest album
$10.45 U2 burst onto the scene at the onset of the '80s with a majestic, uplifting, earnest approach and a unique textural sound that endeared them to fans and critics alike. They spent the rest of the decade growing up in public, solidifying their status as post-punk icons, marrying the good intentions of old-school alternative rock with the epic sonic scale of classic '70s rockers, never sounding less than totally original and never pausing for a hits compilation--until 1998. BEST OF offers a good representation of the complex body of work that made the band a legend.
Fittingly, the album begins with the debut's ...
