| | Aretha Franklin Sings Standards CD Aretha Franklin Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Between 1963 and 1965, before she became the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin recorded six albums for Columbia Records, where she'd been signed by legendary talent scout John Hammond Sr. These albums were significantly different from her later work; Hammond saw her as a jazz singer with gospel roots, and the albums, characterized by polished arrangements (albeit with concessions to the pop market) mostly recall the blues divas of the '40s and '50s.
SINGS STANDARDS is a nicely put-together sampler of Aretha's Columbia work, and although you can hear hints of the style she would develop later in the decade, here she's working very much as a sort of Dinah Washington wannabe--not a bad thing, to be sure, but not the astonishing original she later became. Think of the songs here as cute aural baby pictures. Sings Standards Music Review Purchase Sings Standards CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Best Of David Benoit 1987-1995 CD (1995)
Sings Standards album
$8.95 All songs written or co-written by David Benoit except "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" (Vince Guaraldi/Carel Werber), "Letter To Evan" (Bill Evans) and "Linus And Lucy" (Vince Guaraldi).
During his years with the GRP label, pianist David Benoit became very popular among listeners who enjoy hearing melodic jazz-influenced pop instrumentals that groove in a generally quiet manner. This sampler has 14 selections including two previously unreleased numbers and tunes taken from ten of Benoit's earlier releases. Unfortunately the exact personnel is only given for the new tracks (a rather inexcusable omission). The music overall (which includes a couple of straight-ahead performances recorded for tributes to Bill Evans and Vince Guaraldi) is lightly funky and enjoyable if somewhat lightweight. Highlights include "Cast Your ...

| | Rod Stewart Album (1st LP) CD (1969)
Sings Standards music CDs
$4.49 In between their departure from the Jeff Beck Group and their joining the Small Faces, Rod Stewart and buddy Ron Wood went into the studio to record THE ROD STEWART ALBUM (aka AN OLD RAINCOAT WON'T EVER LET YOU DOWN). Within the span of eight songs, Stewart used his soulful rasp to dismiss any ideas that he was merely Beck's singer. With Wood riding shotgun and playing potent bottleneck guitar, Stewart's talents were demonstrated on mostly self-penned material.
The only exceptions were a rollicking "Street Fighting Man," a baroque reading of Mike D'Abo's "Handbags And Gladrags" (featuring D'Abo on piano) and folkie Ewan MacColl's "Dirty Old Town." Stewart's own material showed off a love of sweeping storytelling ("Blind Prayer"), and even a bit of proggy experimentation ("I Wouldn't Ever Change ...
| | Lost Highway CD (1997) Original Soundtrack
Sings Standards songs
$12.15 "The Perfect Drug" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
While famous rockers may pilfer much of the spotlight on the soundtrack to director David Lynch's LOST HIGHWAY, the album's true stars are the score composers who gave birth to the noir-ish sense of symphonic dread that emanates from its every pore. Longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti's pieces veer from smoky free-jazz roars to amorphous quasi-dubs. Barry Adamson contributes a series of Tom Waits-like moments that can best be described as haunted marching-band music. And soundtrack producer Trent Reznor...well, you know his sense of the world well enough to see that he's a perfect musical fit for ...
| | Roberta Flack First Take CD (1969)
Sings Standards album
$13.95 Although originally released in 1969, FIRST TAKE languished in obscurity until noted jazz fan Clint Eastwood chose Roberta Flack's haunting, minimalist reinterpretation of Scottish folkie Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to score a love scene in his 1972 film PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Latter-day fans of that single and Flack's later smooth soul hits might be surprised at the overall sound of FIRST TAKE.
Recorded with a small combo of jazz giants--guitarist John Pizzarelli, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Ray Lucas, with Flack on piano--and produced by Atlantic's house eccentric Joel Dorn, FIRST TAKE is a jazz album with soul and pop influences. The recording has more in common with Nina Simone, or even Dorn's work with eclectic reedsman Rahsaan Roland Kirk, than mainstream soul divas of the 1970s. Flack's utterly controlled, elegant vocal style and her churchy piano chords root this album, which ...
| | Aretha Franklin Aretha Now CD (1968)
Sings Standards CD music
$6.09 Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (DigiPrep).
Aretha Now opens with the explosive "Think," an ecstatic performance propelled by the singer's gospel-like fervour and punchy piano playing. It set the tone for yet another self-assured selection, in which Franklin brought her expressive voice to bear on a series of excellent songs. She brings new authority to material first recorded by Sam Cooke ("You Send Me"), Don Covay ("See-Saw") and Dionne Warwick ("I Say A Little Prayer"), investing each ...

| | Pilate Caught By The Window CD (2004) Import
Sings Standards CD music
$23.29 Previous to Keane's smash debut Hopes and Fears, Pilate made great inroads in Canada with a similar brand of melancholic Coldplay-like emotionally driven pop. This album only exemplifies this niche as lead singer Todd Clark's high ethereal vocals bring to mind a mix of Chris Martin and Thom Yorke on the mellow opener "Endgame." The song is basically a teaser, though, at two minutes. More developed and more appealing is the lushly textured "Melt Into the Walls," thanks to drummer Bill Keeley's eclectic tempo. Guitarist Chris Greenough accents the song without stealing Clark's power. Pilate successfully and consistently tugs at your heartstrings, although the album's masterpiece "Into Your Hideout" is a foot-stomping power pop tune. Complete with dreamy harmonies, tight arrangements and a great flow, the song is well worth the album on its own. Fortunately, Pilate refuse to rest on that laurel alone. The soft, ...
