| | Aretha Franklin Sings Standards CD Aretha Franklin Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Between 1963 and 1965, before she became the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin recorded six albums for Columbia Records, where she'd been signed by legendary talent scout John Hammond Sr. These albums were significantly different from her later ... Full Descriptionwork; Hammond saw her as a jazz singer with gospel roots, and the albums, characterized by polished arrangements (albeit with concessions to the pop market) mostly recall the blues divas of the '40s and '50s.
SINGS STANDARDS is a nicely put-together sampler of Aretha's Columbia work, and although you can hear hints of the style she would develop later in the decade, here she's working very much as a sort of Dinah Washington wannabe--not a bad thing, to be sure, but not the astonishing original she later became. Think of the songs here as cute aural baby pictures. | | Lost Highway CD (1997) Original Soundtrack
Sings Standards music CDs
$11.99 "The Perfect Drug" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
While famous rockers may pilfer much of the spotlight on the soundtrack to director David Lynch's LOST HIGHWAY, the album's true stars are the score composers who gave birth to the noir-ish sense of symphonic dread that emanates from its every pore. Longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti's pieces veer from smoky free-jazz roars to amorphous quasi-dubs. Barry Adamson contributes a series of Tom Waits-like moments that can best be described as haunted marching-band music. And soundtrack producer Trent Reznor...well, you know his sense of the world well enough to see that he's a perfect musical fit for Lynch's darkly-psychotic-in-the-corners worldview.
Within such a thematically unified context, the contributions of the famous rockers (Smashing Pumpkins, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Reznor's Nine Inch Nails, others) could have either added a voice to the darkness, or ruined the mood altogether. Thankfully, under Reznor's strong-arm guidance, the stars (particularly the drum-machine-driven Pumpkins and drum-and-bass-driven Bowie) go right for the dark side.
| | Roberta Flack First Take CD (1969)
Sings Standards songs
$11.65 Although originally released in 1969, FIRST TAKE languished in obscurity until noted jazz fan Clint Eastwood chose Roberta Flack's haunting, minimalist reinterpretation of Scottish folkie Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to score a love scene in his 1972 film PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Latter-day fans of that single and Flack's later smooth soul hits might be surprised at the overall sound of FIRST TAKE.
Recorded with a small combo of jazz giants--guitarist John Pizzarelli, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Ray Lucas, with Flack on piano--and produced by Atlantic's house eccentric Joel Dorn, FIRST TAKE is a jazz album with soul and pop influences. The recording has more in common with Nina Simone, or even Dorn's work with eclectic reedsman Rahsaan Roland Kirk, than mainstream soul divas of the 1970s. Flack's utterly controlled, elegant vocal style and her churchy piano chords root this album, which has a stately power and deliberate grace even at its most soulful--particularly on a call-and-response version of the spiritual "I Told Jesus" and the heartbreaking "Angelitos Negros."
Out of print in the U.S.! Import pressing of the 1969 debut album from the sophisticated Soul vocalist. Eight tracks. Warner.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Personnel includes: Roberta Flack (vocals, piano); Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Ray Lucas (drums).
| | Aretha Franklin Aretha Now CD (1968)
Sings Standards album
$6.09 Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (DigiPrep).
Aretha Now opens with the explosive "Think," an ecstatic performance propelled by the singer's gospel-like fervour and punchy piano playing. It set the tone for yet another self-assured selection, in which Franklin brought her expressive voice to bear on a series of excellent songs. She brings new authority to material first recorded by Sam Cooke ("You Send Me"), Don Covay ("See-Saw") and Dionne Warwick ("I Say A Little Prayer"), investing each with a ferocious pride and zeal. The original songs are equally strong, resulting in one of the most accomplished soul albums of the 60s. She is the Queen of soul.
More peak-form magic from the Queen's early heyday on this once long-deleted 1968 album that includes the top 10 smashes 'Think' and 'I Say A Little Prayer'. 10 tracks. Rhino. 2003.
