It's a testament to Andrew Lloyd Webber's crowd-pleasing compositional skills that the original cast recording of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA went on to become the biggest-selling cast album ever. In 1979, as China reopened its doors to the west, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern received an unprecedented invitation to tour the country. While in China, Stern performed concerts and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This classic documentary records this extraordinary cultural exchange. Stern and David Golub, the pianist who accompanied him, narrate part of the film, while Tan Shuzhen, a deputy director of the Chinese Conservatory of Music, provides a different and complementary perspective on Chinese culture. According to conductor Leon Botstein, Ernö von Dohnányi's music has been unfairly neglected; Botstein's recording supports his belief word for word. His First Symphony represents a culmination of the romantic symphonic form at a time when Romanticism was becoming a thing of the past. Though it was written when he was just 23 years of age, Dohnányi had already found his voice. The opening movement recalls Bruckner and Brahms and is Mahlerian in scale; the finale sounds possibly influenced by Richard Strauss, yet the Hungarian rhythms are unmistakable and the style is personal: it is Dohnányi. The second movement has a distinctive chamber music feel, and is performed with flexibility and finesse by Botstein and English horn soloist Sue Bohling.
