| | Cat Power Myra Lee CD Cat Power Discography of CDs
Opening with the quiet desperation of "Enough," the bleakness continues on the blues-inflected "We All Die" and a simply heartbreaking solo rendition of Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love With You." It's not all slit-your-wrists ... Full Descriptionmaterial--"Not What You Want" and the rueful "Wealthy Man" are more dismissive than anguished--but MYRA LEE is a stark and powerful folk-based acoustic pop album.
Recorded quickly with bassist Tim Foljahn and drummer Steve Shelley from her previous album, WHAT WOULD THE COMMUNITY THINK? and released quietly on Shelley's part-time Smells Like label, MYRA LEE isn't the tossed-off marking-time effort you might expect. Chan (pronounced Shawn) Marshall's acoustic guitar-based tunes are always rather sparse, and this is by far her most skeletal album, the near-subliminal backing placing her clear voice and disquieting lyrics front and center throughout.
Cat Power: Chan Marshall (vocals); Tim Foljahn, Steve Shelley.
Option (7-8/96, p.96) - "...Marshall's understated acoustic songs burn with a kind of hazy, smoldering glow....There's nothing polished about this album, and nothing particularly pretty, but its raw emotion works on you..." Hide Description Myra Lee Review

Myra Lee album
$9.49 1996's WHAT WOULD THE COMMUNITY THINK? Chan (pronounced "Shawn") Marshall's second album under the name Cat Power, finds the North Carolinian at lo-fi maverick Doug Easley's Memphis studio, her soft, engagingly shy voice and delicate acoustic guitar supported by Easley's pedal steel and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley's percussion. Though Easley and Shelley are better known for working with much louder, noisier artists than Marshall, they never overpower her sensitive but sturdy material.
Sounding more self-assured than she did on her debut, 1995's DEAR SIR, Marshall invests more passion and fire in songs like the foreboding "Water and Air" ...
| | Cat Power Moon Pix CD (1998)
Myra Lee CD music
$10.15 Principally recorded at Sing Sing Studios, Melbourne, Australia in January 1998.
Somewhere between the narcotic stillness of Mazzy Star and the quiet desperation of Lisa Germano, Cat Power's MOON PIX is a compelling, often powerful album of mostly-acoustic songs delivered in Chan (pronounced "Shawn") Marshall's clear, measured voice. Restraint is key here, although troubling images and a distinct undercurrent of unease percolate through songs like the hypnotic "Cross Bones Style."
Elsewhere, the surprising "American Flag" adds a new but not inappropriate trip-hop vibe, and the delicate "He ...
| | Cat Power Covers Record CD (2000)
Myra Lee music CDs
$10.09 On THE COVERS RECORD, Marshall explores the work of other songwriters. She deconstructs each song then reconstructs it as her own. Anyone familiar with Cat Power will be hard-pressed to tell the difference between these COVERS and Marshall's originals. "Satisfaction" is barely recognizable in its new, slowed-down version--the chorus is missing, and the lyrics take on Dylan-esque/surrealist proportions. Other covers include Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason" and an autoharp setting of "Sea of Love." COVERS' retro/vintage, bare-boned, 21st century folk music puts you in mind of how such music must have been before the advent of recording, with songs changing form from one singer to the next.
Cat Power's (Chan Marshall) disarmingly naive music hits you in the gut with its bare simplicity. Her hurt, vibrato-less tone is pure, velvety, and completely understated. In its simplicity, it seems to convey all the sadness of the world--like ...
| | Cat Power Dear Sir CD (1995)
Myra Lee songs
$12.69 Cat Power's debut album is miles removed from the streamlined rockers and wispy balladry of YOU ARE FREE, or the soul-charged pop of THE GREATEST. DEAR SIR, released in 1995, locates Chan Marshall and Company in post-punk territory with its pulsing rhythms and twining electric guitar lines. But while the sound may channel Joy Division or Throwing Muses at times, Chan Marshall's fragile singing and unique songwriting sensibility are entirely her own: dark, mercurial, and full of desperate honesty. DEAR SIR announces a talent to be reckoned with. This is not Marshall at her most refined, but at her rawest.
Rock group's 1995 debut ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Myra Lee album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the ...
