Krumpholtz: Classical Harp Music / Jan Walters
$7.35 Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep Studios).
A concept album of some magnitude, although the subject matter could hardly have been comfortable listening for Anna, Marvin Gaye's ex-wife. She was the subject of Gaye's public 'divorce album', a clever idea if there were no real people involved. The illustration on the sleeve depicts love, marriage, pain and divorce, in addition to the scales of justice (equal). This lengthy album (originally a double vinyl) was poorly received by the critics, although now it has grown in stature, and it really does have considerable depth and melody. Let's face it, if Gaye sang a gardening seed catalogue from cover to cover it would be brilliant.
Recorded at Marvin Gaye Studio, Hollywood, California. HERE MY DEAR was originally released on Tamla (364) as a 2 LP set. Includes liner notes by David Ritz and Curtis M. Shaw.
Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Gordon Banks, Wali Ali (guitar); Ernie Fields (alto saxophone); Charles Owens, Fernando Harkness (tenor saxophone); Nolan Smith (trumpet); Frank Blair (bass); Bugsy Wilcox (drums); Gary Jones, Elmira Colins (percussion).

| | Chris Young Man I Want To Be CD (2009)
Krumpholtz: Classical Harp Music / Jan Walters
$9.19 Since Chris Young appeared on the "Nashville Star" television program in 2006, he's been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with "Drinkin' Me Lonely," his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of THE MAN I WANT TO BE in 2009 haven't done too badly either, getting plenty of play on radio. While Chris Young's sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it's also a lot more hardcore honkytonk than it is the refried '70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians, giving the disc a more organic sound than a lot of what's out there. Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: "Rose in Paradise" is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It's a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is a moving cover of Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia." Its beauty lies in its arrangement; his reading of this classic ballad is utterly tender and believable, accentuanted by a sparse, stripped-down production. And rather than stick with his trademark baritone, he stretches his vocal range--including a mean falsetto--to the brink and still pulls it all off.
Recording information: Loud Recording, Nashville, TN; Oceanway Studios.
Personnel: Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Kenny Greenberg, Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar, dobro); Aubrey Haynie (mandolin, fiddle); John Hobbs, Steve Nathan (piano, keyboards); Eddie Bayers, Jr., Shannon Forrest (drums); Wes Hightower, Tania Hancheroff (background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Julian King.
| | Mozart: Arias / Vesselina Kasarova, Sir Colin Davis, Et Al CD (1997)
Krumpholtz: Classical Harp Music / Jan Walters
$7.69 This disc was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Vocal Performance."
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's compositions are, on the whole, pieces of ageless beauty. Hearing the voice of Vesselina Kasarova bring life to his arias is a testament to the power of performance. Bulgarian-born Kasarova is a unique voice, in that from early youth her musical training focused on the piano. It was only after earning her concert degree that she turned her attention to vocal performance. Her additional study adds depth to her understanding of the music, and this comes through when she sings.
Backed by the Dresden Staatskapelle conducted by Colin Davis, Kasarova performs some of Mozart's best-known arias from 'Le Nozze di Figaro,' 'Don Giovanni' and 'Idomeneo.' Kasarova's mezzo-soprano voice presents an interesting approach to "Io ti lascio, oh cara, addio," which was originally written for bass.
The Lukaskirche in Dresden lends its incredible acoustics to this recording; even the silence has the timbre and feel of a church concert setting.
