5 stars John Rutter, Composer, musician
I have been singing John Rutter's music since I was a teenager. He is my favorite religious composer. Every song gives me "goose-bumps" and fills my soul. Thank you John. In Him, Patti O'Neill

Ken Burns Jazz: The Story Of America's Music CDs  (2000) Box Set

Rutter: Requiem, Magnificat / Rutter, Cambridge Singers, Etc
CD $49.05  5 stars Audio Samples
Compilation producers include: Ken Burns, Steve Berkowitz, Sarah Botstein, Michael Cuscuna, Peter Miller. Includes liner notes by Geoffrey C. Ward, Michael Cuscuna, and Loren Schoenberg. Digitally remastered by Seth Foster and Mark Wilder (Sony Studios, New York, New York) and Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios-East, Edison, New Jersey). Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is renowned for the thoughtful approach he takes to big subjects (baseball, the Civil War, etc.). Jazz fans are fortunate to have someone as intellectually curious as Burns to chronicle the music. As expected, he takes the historian's view that's needed to really cover the story of jazz's development. The fact that a five-disc box can barely scratch the surface speaks more about jazz's rich legacy than it does about any shortcomings of this impressive soundtrack to Burns' work. The discs are divided up chronologically, moving from the Dixieland sound of Louis Armstrong and King Oliver to the big bands of Duke Ellington, on to the bop innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. If this set is lacking in its representation of more "modern" jazz variants (free jazz and beyond), it's only because the 1920s and '30s material that gives the box much of its heft is such an endangered species ...

DVD $9.69  3.7 stars Top 100
Set in 1962; Produced and released in 1973. AMERICAN GRAFFITI presents a powerful collage of youth on the brink of maturity just before the assassination of J.F.K.. Based on George Lucas's own teenage hot-rodding days in Modesto, California, this brilliant, bittersweet comedy inspired numerous other productions, including the long-running TV series HAPPY DAYS. Lucas's second feature film (following THX 1138), AMERICAN GRAFFITI contains an early screen appearance by Harrison Ford, who would figure heavily in the director's next movie, the sci-fi epic STAR WARS. The film follows one night in the lives of several recently graduated high school students. The genial Steve (Ron Howard) prepares to leave for college the next day, and Laurie (Cindy Williams), his girlfriend, is upset by his impending departure. Laurie's brother, Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), the class intellectual, is also slated for college, but he has serious doubts about his future. Also included here are the hopeless nerd (Charles Martin Smith) and the eternally cool drag racer, John (Paul LeMat), who feels pressure to live up to his reputation. A nostalgic feeling is evoked in seeing the teenagers cruising in their hot rods, eating at Mel's Diner, and listening to Wolfman Jack spin the latest hits, with the camera jumping from character to character as they ...

With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), the ...

British soprano Lesley Garrett has achieved enormous popularity in her homeland, and her recordings routinely appear on the Pop Album charts. And while she could be classified as a "crossover" artist, her classical music credentials are impressive, having studied at the Royal Academy of Music and going on to engagements with the Welsh National Opera and later joining the English National Opera. Garrett offers a varied program with I WILL WAIT FOR YOU, which includes art songs, popular songs, arias, and even a spiritual. She displays her operatic pedigree with arias such as "Casta Diva," "Donde lieta usci," and "Parigi o cara," a duet with Ramón Vargas. And where most classically trained artists tend to overwhelm ...
