The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and song dynamics vary more than on the earlier record. On certain songs, Ian MacKaye's lyrics address the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and self-expression. "Look Back and Laugh," "Little Friend," and "It Follows" all incline more toward introspection and ambiguity; conveying loss and sadness in addition to outrage. This second set of songs seems to especially anticipate MacKaye's later work with Fugazi. The album also contains a few playful numbers like the sing-along cover of "Stepping Stone," ...

The songs, delivered in an impassioned rant by a young Henry Rollins, are classic Cal-punk, mocking American complacency ("Six Pack," "TV Party") with a winning combination of anger and satire, as well as an ingratiating sense of structure. Also included on the disc is the early, pre-Rollins EP JEALOUS AGAIN, on which the band similarly rages against the machine, though the attack is a bit less refined. DAMAGED is an American punk classic, and the cornerstone of any punk collection.

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday."
