Were they punk, power pop, or surf rock? After listening to Rhino Records' reissue of Agent Orange's classic 1981 debut Living in Darkness, that's probably what the listener will be wondering. By incorporating all three musical elements into one, this influential Orange County, CA. band showed that they were a step ahead of the rest of the punk/hardcore pack. By adding seven hard-to-find cuts (including pre-debut singles and an interview from 1981) to the original album, this reissue of prime Agent Orange material is by far their best release, and the most appealing for newcomers to the band. The group gained some attention in the mid-'90s when it became public knowledge that alterna-punks the Offspring were huge fans of the band, which led to speculation that they lifted the Middle Eastern motif contained in Agent Orange's "Bloodstains" for their breakthrough hit "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)." The comparison was debatable, but A.O. had lots of other great material, some showcased here -- a cover of Dick Dale's "Miserlou," "Too Young to Die," "No Such Thing," and of course the aforementioned "Bloodstains." You'd be hard pressed to find a better compilation of Agent Orange material than this reissue of Living in Darkness. ~ Greg Prato

$10.65 The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age ...

Living In Darkness music CDs
$11.25 BAD BRAINS was originally released on cassette. It was issued on CD for the first time in 1996.
The Bad Brains were one of the most important voices of the East Coast hardcore scene during its halcyon days of the '80s. What they brought to the scene was nothing short of revolutionary--infusing the form's rage with the spiritual conviction of the Rasta tradition ...
| | Germs (Mia): The Complete Anthology CD (1993)
Living In Darkness songs
$13.09 It's a shame that the Germs are better known for their trashy, charismatic singer Darby Crash's demise than for their music, because M.I.A.: THE COMPLETE ANTHOLOGY proves that they were easily one of the best bands on the LA punk scene in the late 1970s. (According to legend, Crash's fatal overdose wasn't an ...
| | Circle Jerks Group Sex CD (1980)
Living In Darkness album
$9.45 Principally recorded at Byrdcliffe Studios, Culver City, California.
On GROUP SEX, the Circle Jerks' second full-length album, the band makes no great changes in its musical style. On the other hand, there really was no need for revision. Keith Morris (also an early vocalist for Black Flag) and his band mates had pretty much hit the nail on the head the first time out (WILD IN THE STREETS, appended to GROUP on some CD editions). The Jerks play the sort of very fast and very snotty punk rock--complete with thin, weedy vocals--that eventually became all the rage with such chart-topping bands as Green Day, the Offspring, and No Doubt.
As their name and the album title would suggest, the Circle Jerks are not a subtle band. "I Just Want Some Skank" and "World Up My Ass" stand as further examples of their in-your-face lewdness. Standout ...
| | Agent Orange This Is The Voice CD (1986)
Living In Darkness CD music
$10.59 The long-delayed second Agent Orange album isn't quite Living in Darkness part two, though it's little different from that album in many ways -- same nuclear-strength attack that's equal parts surf and punk intensity, catchy and threatening all at once. That said, it's a strong album on its own, with the small changes in the basic sound meaning a lot in context. For one thing, Palm stretches his singing voice more here than before, adding more of the reverb that helped flesh out earlier songs like "Somebody to ...
