| | Last Giant: The John Coltrane Anthology CD John Coltrane Discography of CDs
This 2-CD set comes packaged in a slip case and cloth bound CD wallet. It features a 46 page booklet with essays, complete personnel listings and never-before-seen photos. It also includes four previously unreleased tracks, including an excerpt from Coltrane's last recorded concert, a month before his death in 1967.
This two-disc boxed set is not comprehensive, but it represents an accurate survey of Coltrane's career. Several tracks were originally released as singles or have never before been available, notably the rough "Hot House (Jam Session)," which was recorded in 1946 when Coltrane played in a Navy band at the age of 20, obviously influenced by Charlie Parker. Tracing Coltrane's career through the early 1950s, THE LAST GIANT finds him in his hard bop/Dexter Gordon period on the scratchy radio broadcast "Good Groove" and 1951's "We Love to Boogie," both with the Dizzy Gillespie Sextet.
Examples of Coltrane's work with Monk and the Miles Davis Quintet show him having already developed a distinct sound but still working toward the complexities into which he would grow. Highlights include successful forays into soprano sax playing ('My Favorite Things'), and the ever-increasing emotional and spiritual components of Coltrane's music. The less melodic, more experimental songs of his later career are not represented here, with the exception of the mostly dissonant, difficult "Ogunde," recorded live in 1967.
Recorded between 1946 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn, Lewis Porter, Ira Gitler, Amiri Baraka (a.k.a. Leroi Jones), Ed Bradley and Gary Vercelli.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (dB+, New York).
Personnel includes: John Coltrane (soprano, alto, tenor saxophones), Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Red Garland, Mal Waldron, Kenny Drew, Tommy Flanagan, Wynton Kelly, McCoy Tyner, Alice Coltrane (piano), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Paul Chambers, Percy Heath, Wilbur Ware, Steve Davis, Reggie Workman, Jimmy Garrison, John Lathan (bass), Art Taylor, "Philly" Joe Jones, Shadow Wilson, Jimmy Cobb, Elvin Jones, Rashied Ali, Carl "Kansas" Fields, Charles "Specs" Wright, (drums).
Entertainment Weekly (8/13/93, p.75) - "...looking for a route into jazz from rock & roll? | | Ultimate Charlie Parker CD (1999)
Last Giant: The John Coltrane Anthology music CDs
$12.49 Also available as part of a box set on Verve (543 078). Tracks selected by Jackie McLean.
Recorded between 1946 and 1952. Includes liner notes by Jackie McLean and Bob Blumenthal.
For its unique ULTIMATE series of compilations, Verve Records made the wise decision of letting jazz legends pick their favorite recordings by their favorite artists. For ULTIMATE CHARLIE PARKER, alto saxophonist and jazz educator Jackie McLean choose 11 excellent tracks from Parker's work for the legendary label.
Given Parker's relatively small number of Verve sessions, McLean is necessarily limited, but his choices are inarguable. Included here are four tracks from Parker's legendary 1946 shows at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, including the breathtaking "I Got Rhythm" and the impossibly fleet-fingered "After ...

Last Giant: The John Coltrane Anthology songs
$9.39 Just about every major label began issuing budget-priced sets of its catalog artists come the early 21st century, such as the Universal Masters Collection, which inherited the back catalog of former Island recording artist Anthrax. Issued in early 2002, the 15-track Anthrax edition of Universal Masters Collection focuses solely on the group's recordings with singer Joey Belladonna (1985 through 1991), which means that the front cover image is a quite misleading botch job (Belladonna's replacement, John Bush, is featured in the group shot). Despite the ...
| | Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey Walking With Giants CD (2004) Bonus DVD
Last Giant: The John Coltrane Anthology album
$12.89 The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a rather fascinating trio. Reed Mathis is the main wild card, for he plays acoustic bass, octave pedal-induced bass (which sometimes sounds like a guitar), cello, 12-string guitar and sitar. Mathis is often in the lead (particularly when playing in the upper register), pianist Brian Haas is quite unpredictable (almost swinging in spots and then indulging in sound explorations), and drummer-percussionist Jason Smart is very alert to the other two musicians' spontaneous ideas. The music is avant-garde, but also crosses over into fusion and post-bop. There are times when one wishes the group would break into a groove but the episodic music does not find them settling into any one basic idea for long. In addition to the 13 selections on this CD (all originals), this set also comes with a four-song DVD ("Pacific"/"Walking With Giants"/"Slow Breath Silent Mind"/"There Is No Method"), music that was freely improvised on March 30 and 31, 2004 before an audience at Yoshi's in Oakland. The addition of the DVD makes this set a particularly good buy for listeners curious as to what the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is about. ~ Scott Yanow
