Beauty Is A Rare Thing: The Complete Atlantic Recordings CD music Teamed up in a trio with bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Joey Baron, pianist Fred Hersch is heard on this date exploring the modern mainstream of jazz. His thoughtful and exploratory solos on such numbers as Ornette Coleman's "Enfant," Jimmy Rowles' "The Peacocks," "What Is This Thing Called Love," "Blue In Green" and three of his own originals (including the title cut) are full of subtle and generally swinging surprises. This CD is a fine example of Fred Hersch's playing. ~ Scott Yanow Live Recording Recorded at Classic Sound Studio, New York, New York on December 4 & 5, 1986. Includes liner notes by Fred Hersch. Beauty Is A Rare Thing: The Complete Atlantic Recordings album for sale 2009 collection. Using Blue Note artists and catalog as a starting point, these compilations are a fun, funky way to introduce people to Jazz and associated genres. These are definitely not for the purist Jazz fan (indeed, some titles barely contain any out-and-out Jazz at all), but all have that rare groove/early Funk influence that appeals to a wide range of people and have a real chance of being picked up by the younger end of the Jazz demographic. Using a wide range of material, each album is a compilation that raids the Blue Note vaults as well as mining the archives at Capitol and many other labels. As such, they are a great primer for any casual buyer that wants to pick up some jazzy titles without being too serious about it. 16 tracks including cuts from Eddie Henderson, Latimore, Chico Hamilton, Alphonse Mouson, Ronnie Foster and others.

Beauty Is A Rare Thing: The Complete Atlantic Recordings songs For those who've been among the Galactic faithful from the beginning, The Other Side of Midnight: Live in New Orleans is the big payoff. It's not that there is a dearth of sanctioned live material, either: their 2008-2010 New Orleans Jazz Fest gigs were issued by MunckMix; and way back in 2001, We Love 'Em Tonight: Live at Tipitina's was issued as well. But Other Side of Midnight is an entirely different level. Recorded at Tipitina's in October of 2010, this disc follows the issue of Galactic's musical masterpiece, Ya-Ka-May and the core band -- saxophonist Ben Ellman, bassist Robert Mercurio, drummer Stanton Moore, guitarist Jeff Raines, and organist Rich Vogel --was at its tightest. Anti ponied up a budget for this set as well: engineered by the Crescent City's mad genius Misha Kachkachshvili, with a live mix by Ryan Jones, the sound quality on this date is big, fat, dynamic, and hot. That said, Galactic seems to be at its best when collaborating with guests and there are plenty here. Trombone Shorty stops by for a rollicking live reprise of "Cineramascope," from Ya-Ka-May (with added trumpet of Shamarr Allen who appears on most tracks here); Legend Cyril Neville lends his vocals to a nasty version of the Meters' classic "Gossip" (which also features the Rebirth Brass Band's Corey "Boe Money" Henry's trombone), and the hard-rocking "Heart of Steel." Henry's rap fronts Galactic and the Soul Rebels Brass Band on the title track off From the Corner to the Block. Whether it's the scorching yet humorous Eastern European brass band music-meets-Mardis Gras street party on "Balkan Wedding," the careening brassy funk of "Garbage Truck," or the driving, knotty brass band (the Soul Rebels again) and rhythm section jazz changes in "Boe Money," the grooves are non-stop, over the top, and firmly in the pocket, no matter how wild things get. Nola's gender blender bounce star Big Freedia handles the encore on a maniacal reprise one of Ya-Ka-May's best tracks, "Double It." Clocking in at an hour, this set is pure party from beginning to end and belongs in any serious collection of New Orleans music in general, and more specifically, in every Galactic fan's. Period. ~ Thom Jurek Photographers: Jerry Moran; Brady Fontenot. Personnel: Corey Henry (vocals, trombone); Cyril Neville (vocals, percussion); Ben Ellman (harmonica, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Shamarr Allen (trumpet); Rich Vogel (keyboards); Stanton Moore (drums, cymbals). Recording information: Tipitina's, New Orleans, LA (10/29/2010).

Beauty Is A Rare Thing: The Complete Atlantic Recordings album for sale For pop music centrists who have been daunted by the sobriety and pacing of sacred Tibetan chants, this attractive book/CD combo may be the ticket to enlightened listening. Monks from two great Tibetan monasteries (Khampagar and Loseling) perform their extended chants alone, with focus on the extraordinary voices, and in combination with traditional trumpets, cymbals, and percussion. The 64-page book, chock-full of pictures and bite-size essays, helps with the entry into the music, but the music itself is so compelling and beautifully recorded that anyone who makes the effort to abandon the usual search for hooks, refrains, and other instant gratifications will be rewarded with an impressive experience. ~ Bob Tarte Includes liner notes by Cynthia Josayma and David Lewiston. Liner Note Author: David Lewiston. Photographers: David Lewiston; Greta Jensen; Clive Arrowsmith.
