In those benighted pre-Chili Peppers dark ages of the mid-'70s, the notion of a bunch of Caucasian Scotsmen laying down heavy funk seemed an odd one. Even a cursory listen to AWB puts any such reservations quickly to rest. Alan Gorrie's soulful ... Full Descriptionvocals and percussive, syncopated basslines interact perfectly with Hamish Stuart's funky, rhythmic guitar work. On the band's signature tune, the mostly instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces," the theme is stated by a punchy-but-slinky horn section, with sinuous interpolations from Hamish. Here the band demonstrates its impressive rhythmic facility and its ability to stop on a dime (the death-defying groove rivals the JBs in their prime).
For a group capable of such intense polyrhythmic interaction, the Average White Band keeps things surprisingly song-based, and Gorrie's vocals are the central focus of everything but "Pick Up the Pieces." "Nothing You Can Do" and "Just Wanna Love You Tonight" dip into romantic R&B love balladry, while "Keepin' It To Myself" finds the boys mining the contemporaneous Al Green/Willie Mitchell arrangement style. Conversant in all the variants of mid-'70s funk and R&B, the Average White Band succesfully married pop smarts with dance-floor groove power.

31 Years and still going strong The first time I heard this album I was at Bert Murray's apartment off campus at LSU smoking an excellent bong of Columbian Redbud. It was 1974 and I was a smiling stoner grooving on what I thought was an outstanding new black band. Bert told me they were white--like real Scottish white, which REALLY blew me away-- and showed me the album cover. Thus was born my unending love of AWB. To this day their first album is in my top 5 to listen to, along with Dark Side of the Moon, and others, and can get my aging body grooving and moving any time I put it on. A true masterpiece Submitted by infauxman (Lafayette, LA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Much is made of the fact that the members of the Average White Band were pale-faced Scots who somehow managed to be funky as all get-out, but the truth is that AWB was simply one of the tightest R&B/funk combos of the 1970s, regardless of ethnicity and nationality. The band's fourth album continues the momentum of its predecessors by offering more lock-step grooves and slippery bass lines peppered with clarion horns and memorable vocal refrains. The title track, an R&B hit in 1975, is a case in point.
CUT THE CAKE also contains smooth mid-tempo groovers ("School Boy Crush"), and quiet storm balladry ("Cloudy" and a cover of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven"), sounding sharp and sassy in all styles. Despite ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Awb album
$7.59 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). Newly remastered & now with 4 bonus tracks, ...
