If you want to get technical, which you probably don't, the songs that comprise the 13th volume of Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits probably aren't new wave -- and if they are new wave, they're arriving at the tail end of new wave, when the term didn't signify as much (as if it ever did). That means this is devoted to songs from the mid-'80s, from defining songs like Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" to such great power pop revivals as Dwight Twilley's "Girls." Between those two extremes are some definitive singles of the '80s -- Wang Chung's amazing, cool "Dance Hall Days," the Bangles' '60s-spangled "Hero Takes a Fall," Nik Kershaw's underrated "Wouldn't It Be Good," Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now," Bananarama's best song, "Cruel Summer," the Bus Boys' Ghostbusters anthem, "Cleanin' Up the Town," and Echo & the Bunnymen's haunting "The Killing Moon," possibly the best song they ever recorded. The other songs on this collection don't quite meet this standard -- even the '80s protest anthem "Free Nelson Mandela" by the Special AKA -- but they're still good and, when surrounded by such classics as the aforementioned singles, they sound even better. So, the end result is one of the very best installments of the Just Can't Get Enough series. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
