Recorded on the Japanese tour of 1972, Deep Purple created the most effortless of great live albums. Labouring under the Machine Head tour and with inter-band relationships that saw both Gillan and Glover feuding with the sometimes difficult Blackmore and quitting the band early the following year, the record, for its part, does not suffer from the personnel inconsistencies, the band playing what would become, in retrospect, a greatest hits set. The consistency of the material - 'Child In Time', 'Strange Kind Of Woman', 'Space Truckin" - was, and still is, astounding, matched only by the arch standards of Purple's live performance.
Recorded live Japan from August 15-17, 1972.
Digitally remastered by Steve Hoffman.

Deep Purple - Made In Japan Songs
Made In Japan Music Review
Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All 23 Reviews Brings back the memories A must have CD for any DP fans or true rock & rollers! Takes me back to their reunion tour many years back (Tacoma, WA.), which I was lucky enough to "experience" (you don't just "listen" to Deep Purple live). It will be a long time (if ever) before a performance of this caliber will happen again! Submitted by tweister (Anchorage, Alaska, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 5 of 8 found this helpful.
Would have been a 5 star but I agree with others here that this album is one of the finest live rock albums of all time by the band that really invented "heavy metal". Made before the fake live albums many artists chose to release during the 70's such as Kiss, Frampton and others that used lots of studio sweetening afterwards. Sometimes on these fake live albums all that was "live" was the crowd sounds. Like I said before, a great album, although the remastering engineer for this release forgot something. Ian Pace is a left handed drummer. The stereo image is set up as if a right handed drummer would be playing. So as a result of this Richie Blackmore and John Lord are on the wrong sides of the image. The Deep Purple set up live was Richie Blackmore(guitar) always on the right side and John Lord(B3 organ) was on the left. This imaging has the band set up backwards. The sound quality is awesome, performances were awesome! Submitted by David (Santa Barbara, CA.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 5 of 8 found this helpful.
A REVOLUTIONARY ALBUM FOR ITS TIME I'M OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER HOW WE WORE OUT THE VINYL LISTENING TO THE POWERHOUSE CUTS ON "MACHINE HEAD". BUT THEN CAME "MADE IN JAPAN," AND WE STOPPED LISTENING TO THE STUDIO VERSIONS OF THESE SONGS BECAUSE OF THE RAW ENERGY AND QUALITY RECORDINGS OF THE LIVE PERFORMANCES. THIS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST LIVE ALBUMS THAT SOUNDED BETTER THAN STUDIO PRODUCTIONS. I'M GLAD TO SEE THAT OVER 30 YEARS LATER, THIS ALBUM STILL COMMANDS RESPECT. Submitted by ARTR420 (PARK RIDGE, IL. All Time Classic- in Everyone's Top3/5 If you're into Heavy Metal/Hard Rock, this is a must for your collection as well as your education!
It has everything. The most stunning thing is the 5 world class/all time great individuals (all still playing & performing) who play better when they play together and better still when they play live!!
This has energy, style, rhythm and instinctive timing. 35 years later is still fresh & UNDUBBED. All other live albums in this class have to equate to this. The digitisation adds to the sound quality & the bonus tracks really rock. This is strictly 'no brainer' territory. Submitted by AliB (Dublin, Irl) Was This Review Helpful?
