Loud, Fast & Out Of Control: The Wild Sounds Of '50S Rock CD
|
LOUD, FAST & OUT OF CONTROL contains an 80 page booklet featuring rare photos and art that evoke the 1950's.
Includes liner notes by Michael Ventura, Billy Vera, Colin Escott and Gary Stewart.
Rock and roll was once a young and untamed beast. It made teenage kids quit work, rip up movie theater seats, and run around the block naked. This was in the '50s, an era normally associated with sock hops and picket fences. Only a music made of primal energy, a manic concoction of lust, gibberish and thumping beats, could be responsible for leading an entire nation's young astray. Rhino's box set reigns in the best of the '50s mayhem in a staggeringly potent 4-disc set of pure, unadulterated rock and roll.
With a literal roll call of rock's founding heroes (Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, etc.) and unsung greats (Johnny Kid, Wanda Jackson, Ronnie Hawkins) riding shotgun, this is the most thrilling overview of rock's formative years available. Time has not dimmed an ounce of power from these recordings. There is a raw sense of newfound freedom that pulses feverishly throughout the set. Gene Vincent's drummer screams suddenly, for no apparent reason. Duane Eddy rips at his guitar as if he's just found what his fingers were for. And when Bill Riley barks "My gal is red hot," sock hops are nothing more than a quaint memory.
4 CdsEntertainment Weekly (12/24/99, p.152) - Included in EW's "The Best of 1999" - "...this 4 CD set makes a strong case that [Rock] was never more deranged, subversive, or thrilling than its first blast from the late-'50s freedom..." CMJ (7/5/99, p.28) - "...decisively establish[es] the brilliance and ingenuity of often-overlooked '50s rock 'no roll....brings lesser known acts...to their rightful place among well-worn hits from the likes of giants like Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins..."

every song is great This isn't a compilation where you'll remember a few songs, enjoy a few new ones and then say "that was nice" while secretly wishing you had blown that money on some good green and some fun times at the bar, every single track on all four discs of this set is great.
