In 1988, prior to their graduation from Ohio's Antioch College (where the band was formed), the Gits recorded a collection of tracks for a cassette-only release. The cassette, which appeared nearly 4 years before their first "official" album FRENCHING THE BULLY, features early versions of what came to be Gits classics ("Cut My Skin it Makes Me Human" and "Kings & Queens" are especially good). There is also the inevitable track or two that displays more enthusiasm than actual skill, and the odd cover, such as a gritty, sneering version of the Stooges "Loose" that does Iggy and the boys proud.
Other standouts include a version of "It All Dies Anyway" that is slightly looser and more swinging than the subsequent version from FRENCHING THE BULLY, "Snivelling Little Rat Faced Git" (which, incidentally, was the band's original name), a intricate blink-and-you-miss-it sliver of pure punk, and "Still You Don't Know What It's Like," which recalls X circa-UNDER THE BIG BLACK SUN. KINGS & QUEENS is a surprisingly well-formed album for what essentially amounts to a collection of demo recordings, and another must-have chapter in the saga of the Gits.
This recording of THE GITS was made in Ohio in 1988 before their emigration to Seattle. It was recorded in a studio in one take to two stereo tracks. 100 cassettes were produced and sold in a matter of days. After the murder of Gits front-woman Mia Zapata, the band decided to release this early recording. It shows a musical depth and feeling not heard very often in punk music. It showcases Mia Zapata's vocal range and ability to improvise like a great blues singer.I recommend it to anyone new to the music of THE GITS, or those wanting to delve deeper into the musical contributions of THE GITS or Zapata as an artist.
Recorded at Soundspace, Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1988. "Graveyard Blues" was recorded live at the Canal Street Tavern, Dayton, Ohio. Originally released as PRIVATE LUBS, in 1988. Includes liner notes by Peter Sheehy.
The Gits: Mia Zapata (vocals); Joe Spleen (guitar); Matt Dresdner (bass); Steve Moriarty (drums).

Kings And Queens
$11.85 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular tracks and multimedia computer files.
This CD contains previously unreleased songs, live performances and remixed, remastered material.
Recorded live on January 14, 1993. Includes liner notes by Peter Sheehy.
This album was created with the help of producer, Jack Endino and I believe that it serves as an excellent retrospective of The Gits' short lived and hard fought career. It is also a testament to Mia Zapata's innate talent as a punk singer and her genuine passion and strength as a woman. The idea of putting together the album took shape while I spent four months in bed recovering from a shattered lower leg. I lied around listening to dozens of old board tapes of The Gits. Some of the tapes were from the last U.S. tour we did during the summer of 1993. There were several songs we played on that tour which we never had a chance to record...or so I thought. While in Los Angeles we discussed a contract for recording our third album for Atlantic. Our plan was to do a west coast tour, go home, finish our second album, and then leave on a full U.S. "Rock for Choice" tour. After that we had plans to tour Europe for a second time. Back in Seattle while recording our second album, "Enter...The Conquering Chicken", our friend and singer, Mia Zapata was murdered. ...
| | Yo La Tengo And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out CD (2000)
Kings And Queens
$10.45 Principally recorded at Alex The Great, Nashville, Tennessee and The Pigeon Club, Hoboken, New Jersey.
On its 10th, and undoubtedly sexiest album, Yo La Tengo creates a smoky, sonic novella to love and lovers, a lonesome pop record as beautifully stark as it is happy, and as full of detailed nooks and crannies as its riddling title implies. Songs like "Our Way to Fall," "Last Days of Disco" and especially "You Can Have It All" are simple pop love notes destined to become standards in some brave romantic world better than ours (if they are diary entries from ...
| | Gits Frenching The Bully CD (1992)
Kings And Queens
$11.85 Remixed from the original master tapes by Jack Endino and The Gits.
FRENCHING THE BULLY, the Gits' debut album--and the only one released before the murder of singer Mia Zapata--encapsulates the band's sound and fury in a way that few debuts do. The skeleton of their sound, Steve Moriarty's high-speed drumming, is fleshed out with Matt Dresdner's astonishingly flexible bass and Joe Spleen's scorched-earth guitar heroics. The real star, though, is Zapata's voice. Occasionally ragged and often spine-chilling, but always powerful--comparisons to Janis Joplin are not entirely unwarranted--she belts out lyrics that often deal with the struggle to survive in the face of internal or external hostility.
Standouts include "Another Shot of Whiskey," an extremely catchy slab of vitriol with some very subtle hooks, the swaggering "Slaughter of Bruce," a take on country punk (emphasis on the punk) with a drum break more passionate than skillful, and the pair of "While You're Twisting I'm Still Breathing" and "Cut My Skin it Makes Me Human," both of which display a force of will rarely seen in rock music. The album's masterpiece, though, is the snarling "Second Skin," a brittle slice of self-analysis ...
