It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish IF ON A WINTER NIGHT...; no other Christmas album exists in the head like this. It's a holiday album for people who have never wanted to hear a holiday album, let alone own one.

September 18, 1983 is a day that will go down in Kisstory. It was then that Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and replacement members Vinnie Vincent and Eric Carr took off their signature makeup and revealed themselves on MTV. LICK IT UP was released, and a new chapter unfolded.
Using the same production team as CREATURES OF THE NIGHT, Michael James Jackson, Simmons and Stanley came up with the same bone crunching sound as CREATURES, but with a slightly more polished feel. "Exciter" kicks off the album with a machine gun riff, which leads into Gene Simmons proclaiming he's "Not For The Innocent". The title track was a modest hit in the U.S., faired better in the U.K. and made for quite an entertaining video. "All Hell's Breakin' Loose" is a gritty streetwise track where Paul Stanley actually raps! "And On The 8th Day" is a powerful anthem that closes an exciting album.
With Vinnie Vincent's expert guitar playing and songwriting abilities (he co-wrote 8 out of the 10 tracks) and Eric Carr's powerful backbeat, LICK IT UP proves that behind all the explosions and firebreathing, the band can deliver the goods musically.

Bikini Kill's first "proper" record blasts by in a searing 25 minutes. Though improving greatly on the production quality of the band's earlier efforts, PUSSY WHIPPED still subscribes to the "everything louder than everything else" theory of sound sculpting. That said, the production convincingly adds a brittle immediacy to the record that only serves to raise the album's emotional stakes.
The standouts here are "Alien She," which is sung as a particularly gruesome lullaby while the music crunches and lurches awkwardly in the foreground; "Speed Heart," featuring a paint-peeling guitar that starts slow but works up to terminal velocity over the song's brief length; "Rebel Girl," re-recorded from YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, which here gets a jacked up drums and an added searing from the guitars; and "For Tammy Rae," which, given the fury that precedes it, is a surprisingly moving love song. The best track, though, is the one and a half-minute "Star-Bellied Boy," one of the most blunt and moving evocations of sexual frustration ever recorded--and Kathleen Hanna's vocals here will raise the hair ...
