| | Giant Sand Center Of The Universe CD Giant Sand Discography of CDs
Giant Sand's ninth album represents a new peak for this fine and prolific band. Led by Howe Gelb and based in Arizona, the band roams freely between raucous, loud rock & roll and country-tinged balladry. There are definite parallels between this band's work and the work of Neil Young, especially his more sprawling efforts with Crazy Horse.
CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE is made up of some of Gelb's best songs. There's the cheerful and popish "Milkshake Girl," followed by the gorgeous "Stuck." The latter song melds a churchly bearing (complete with swelling organ parts) with a casually honest first-person narrative. The band plays with commitment and devotion to the material and to the moment at every turn. Gelb and cohorts have released many fine works, and this is decidedly one of the best to start with for the unfamiliar.
Additional personnel includes: Victoria Williams (background vocals).
Producers: Howe Gelb, Michael Dumas, John Convertino.
Giant Sand: Howe Gelb (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Joey Burns (acoustic bass); Paula Jean Brown (electric bass); John Convertino (drums, kalimba).
Spin (5/93, pp.85-87) - Highly Recommended - "...probably Gelb's most straightly rockin' release ever....Gelb's lyrics are filled with rambling truth and trash-biting imagery, while his guitar work embraces an incredible width of style and invention..." Center Of The Universe
$12.59 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned with ...
| | Baroness Blue Record CDs (2009) Limited Edition; Deluxe Edition
Center Of The Universe
$13.58 Georgia-based psychedelic rock band (calling them a metal act seems very reductive, though there's some seriously headbangable material on this disc) Baroness has made a subtle but unmistakable evolutionary leap on this, their second full-length and a clear companion piece to 2007's RED ALBUM. It's hard to say exactly what new guitarist Pete Adams has brought to the band after replacing drummer Allen Blickle's brother ...

| | Flight Of The Conchords I Told You I Was Freaky CD (2009) Digipak
Center Of The Universe
$12.44 After a glorious first season that earned the HBO show six Emmy nominations, Flight of the Conchords' second run didn't quite pack the same comedic punch. Some would say it was because the premise lost its luster, but it was mostly because the music just wasn't as strong. Most of the songs in Season One were pre-written and hashed out over years of stand-up, and for Season Two, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie were in a time crunch: forced to write a dozen or so funny songs and ten episodes from scratch. Considering the circumstances, FOTC's second Sub-Pop outing, I TOLD YOU I WAS FREAKY, has some worthwhile moments. In the R. Kelly-based "We're in Love with a Sexy Lady," Bret and Jemaine debate semantics while trying to determine if they're after the same lazy-eyed girl. "When'd you meet this lady?/Then./When?/Then./Right then?/Right then./Where?/There./Over there?/Over there./Over there there?/Over there there there," and so on, building up to Bret's ultimate ...

Center Of The Universe

This was the second of the Song Books that Ella Fitzgerald recorded for the Verve label in the mid 1950s. The brilliant Nelson Riddle hadn't yet signed on, but Verve staff arranger Buddy Bregman was fully up to the task of providing musical settings for Ella's letter-perfect readings of these lyrical and witty gems. Fitzgerald's voice, with its uncanny bell-like timbre, was the perfect vehicle for conveying the sheer beauty of "Spring Is Here," "It Never Entered My Mind," "I Could Write a Book," et al. On the other side, the exuberant ...
