311 scoffs at categorical definitions throughout the disc, giving no credence to the commonly accepted definitions of rock, hip-hop, and the like. Fortunately, the individual members all have the instrumental chops and the freewheeling sense of fun needed to make the pell-mell fusion work, and while the group would continue to refine its aesthetic and gain in popularity with future releases, GRASSROOTS remains one of their strongest and most defining efforts.

Eclectic rock outfit 311 began to hit its stride with this sophomore effort. The impulse to skip wildly between styles is one of the band's distinguishing characteristics, and that impulse comes to the fore on GRASSROOTS. In addition to the mixture of funk, hard rock, and hip-hop that typified 311's debut, GRASSROOTS also features island grooves, psychedelia, and jam band-like explorations.

From the header, its just an essential 311 album. The sound is just freakn' tight and always sick. All the tracks are awsome begining to end and a must have for any real 311 fan.

5 stars One of the best!
This cd is my second favorite album. This cd, from star to finish is a great album. You can put this cd on, and here a different stylee of music in almost every song. 311 is know for their originality, and they really show it in this cd. From hard, raw 311, to mellow, and funky beats. And of course amazing lyrics. Put this cd on, and dont skip through any songs and you will love how this cd flows till the last note is played. Thanks 311!!

5 stars 311 Making thier voice heard
Many people feel that 311 all started in 1995 with the release of thier self-titled alblum..i think not. When i was 13, in '93 I bought the alblum "Grassroots".My parents had to deal with that alblum playing 24-7.Even now at 21 my girlfriend has to deal with it. The music in this alblum is unforgetable. 311's Mix of hip hop and reggae and rock is a must have for anyone who wants to hear something great,that you wont hear from anyone but 311.This is thier 2nd widespread released alblum.It was good then and it still is now.If you can find this one for under 20 bucks act quick.You wont be disappointed. I assure you!
