Classics - Malcolm Frager Plays Chopin
$28.59 This Josef Von Sternberg film, based on Heinrich Mann's novel PROFESSOR UNRAT, made Marlene Dietrich a star and began a tumultuous relationship between star and director that spanned Sternberg's most creative period. The film stars Emil Jannings as Dr. Immanuel Rath, a provincial prep school teacher who becomes incensed when he learns his boys have become infatuated with Lola Lola (Dietrich), a cabaret singer. Heading to the Blue Angel, a nightclub, to catch his pupils, Rath instead becomes bewitched by the sensuous Lola himself, beginning an obsession that drives him to the depths of despair. Visionary, haunting, and emotionally unrelenting, THE BLUE ANGEL stands as Sternberg's crowning achievement. Filmed in both German and English simultaneously, this is the German version, which is considered superior to its English language counterpart.
This special 2-disc set features the full German and English versions of Marlene Dietrich's "Blue Angel" Screen test. Plus, concert footage, interviews, original trailers, photo gallery, commentary and more! Remastered from the original 35mm negative.

| | Cinp Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture, Marche Slave, Etc /Kunzel, Et Al CD (2001) SACD Hybrid; Remastered
Classics - Malcolm Frager Plays Chopin
$15.19 Selections recorded in Music Hall, Cincinnati, Ohio and in Masonic Auditorium, Cleveland, Ohio.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Tchaikovsky's infamous "1812 Overture" has gotten a modern face-lift. Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have a new rendition of the celebratory classic, one that includes choral work from the Kiev Symphony Chorus, along with some of the most impressive cannons and bells heard to date. Over 20 years ago, this adventurous conductor/ensemble pairing inaugurated the legendary Telarc label with their 1978 debut version of the battle hymn. Creating a more dramatic picture, the ensemble has now produced a performance to surpass their landmark interpretation, using the new DSD (direct stream digital) recording process. This enables a finely tuned, three-dimensional listening experience. Ready to put your speakers to the test, it gives the listener the "best seat in the house" by capturing the vibrant ambience of Cincinnati's world-famous Music Hall with precise detail.
Other prominent works included are "March Slave," "Capriccio Italien," and the "Festival Coronation March." All are performed with depth and power, all the while stirring with grandiose lyricism. Rising to the occasion, Kunzel proves that with the aid of new recording technologies and a world-class orchestra, some of the most striking and poetic renditions of the standard repertoire are yet to come.
